The algorithm was used in sentencing, and then the authors jumped right to when the felons were released and kept track of who reoffended. It could actually show racism in sentencing (blacks get longer sentences and therefore reoffend less than the model predicts).

I actually don't completely trust the authors of that study. Someone should take a look at it too. They did eliminate a large portion of cases and then not look at them.
They didn't look at crimes committed, or at least they didn't control for it. Blacks could have disproportionately been convicted for drug crimes which the model couldn't predict as well.
Also, remember that the makers of the model likely did not include race at all. The reporters who audited it. So, if it is biased against blacks, political correctness could very well be to blame.

Ten minutes of research would show that Google optimizes ad display based on CTR or click-through rates. It simply means that women click less on those ads and thus the algorithm displays them less to women.
