Famines and wars were pretty common. Plus you had to do back breaking labor and didn't had a lot of stuff to do on your free time

The hardest labor in feudal societies was farming, but even then you would only be working for 3/4s of the year and you would be basically self-employed. Also if you had a trade you would be able to avoid doing massive amounts of physical labor.

The biggest problem is the rigid social castes. The whole idea of the American Dream is that anyone can become anything if they're willing to work at it. You can go from living on the street to living in the penthouse, it's happened many a time. And that gives people hope and makes life not-miserable, the thought that you could make it big one day.

In feudalism there is no hope. If you are born a poor serf you will stay a poor serf your whole life. Besides the most simple pleasures in life you have nothing.

Right, but now that we know that isn't true, we should focus on more realistic social structures.

You mean the two things most responsible for death in human history? I'd take feminism and immigration over the occasional famine or local war any day.
>>
>>78737618

That is not what Feudalism was about bro. You could have these things now if you wanted too. Just give the existing government the same power over you life that the Lord in his Castle had over his serfs back in the day.

I'm guessing you wouldn't like that "realistic" social structure if you were at the bottom of it along with most people

So...basically 90 percent of the time it was shit, and every Sunday it was okay?

Let's not pretend. Old times were shit to live in.

It's fine and good to glorify knights and samurai and things as awesome, and the time periods as mystical and fantastic. But, I'd rather do that from the comfort of my modern house, with air con and spider-repellent, without the looming threat of being conscripted into the third war this year, or running out of potatoes.

not really, if you are able to make profit your pretty much set, social mobility correlates to wealth.
>>
>>78741907

Except that you couldn't make profit because your Lord took all the excess aside from what you needed to feed yourself if you were lucky. Not to mention under current systems we can someday retire. Under feudalism once you can no longer work, and it was manual labor that wore down your body so that's like.. 40, you just died.

The only people who 'profit' are the lords whose land you live on. No matter how much you grow, you only get to keep enough to survive on. The rest goes to the lord of the land. If you refuse or rebel against the lord, he might decide to 'look the other way' while bandits raze your village.
>>
>>78740522
Well social mobility is not really that much of a thing in most capitalist societies but I will admit that there certainly was a lot less of it in Feudal societies. But then again, why do you need to be a feudal lord when you can just lead a nice life as a blacksmith or something?

>>
>>78742470
Bah you are an idiot.

In the european medieval feudalism people payed 10%-15% of what they produced/earned to the landlord("war"-nobility).

That is why that tax was called a "Zehent" (tenth part) in german and I think "tithe" in english back then.

The landlord used that tax for building and construction, feeding and gearing the guards and knights to protect the people (btw the guards were always sons from the people and would have never harmed their own, or let them be harmed)

If the evil evil landlord would have decided to "let" bandits raid a village his own guards and knights would have killed him. (Praetorian tradition)

Also the nobility did not have unlimited power - according to popular belief. They were bound by law. Also the village/town etc. councils (heritage of the things) had a say in local things. Lords did not actually mess with day to day local decisions in the villages on their land. Large decisions or emergency decisions were made by the lord alone.

During the medieval, twonlove was vibrant and active.
They celebrated basically all the time.
The average farmer was "wealthier" in medieval standards then the average worker today.

They could affort to throw feasts for relatives and frieds every two weeks with ease.

Also their protein consumption was much higher, since there were unbelieveably many artificial fishponds

My brain, I studied that 2 years in universtiy before I quit. I usually was the only fuck who actually sat in the faculty library all day.

There are some pretty good documentations about this and also some books.

Go and look for them on youtube, or google.

Funfact: During the outgoing late madieval some brainfucked writers wanted to smear the centuries before them so show everyone how "progressive" this new age was. Nearly all myths regarding the medieval times originate from those handful of shitheads.

They did not revolt. They indebted the kings and emperors and forced them to discharge the "war-nobility"/natural nobility and noble them instead. Since those rich merchants did not give a crap about the people and their land many of them were killed by their own guards/knights.

That is why they pursued rulers to abolish the warrior-class so they weren't reliant on then and could hire sellswords instead.

With feudal systems , the threat of resistance is quelled by not allowing the people to be armed with anything besides farming tools. IN today's current system, I can protect myself with guns. And even if we were in the same technological era, a capitalist system still affords FAR more safety then Feudalism.
>>
>>78749293
Think about this:

The nobility up until the late medieval had their lands for generations. Their bloodline was tied to their land and the people on it. Their guards were the sons of their people (not good idea to piss them off by being cruel).

The Lords were bound by the law. They could not simply make arbitrary bullshit decisions. The knights and also the guards of the medieval continued the praetorian tradition - originated in ancient rome - and would kill off a cruel arbitrary Lord who would harm their families and relatives.

Actually the Lords often protected their people from the religious authorities.

They were depended on the wellbeing of their people. Only healthy and content farmers, hunters, builders etc. are efficient and freely give the tithe for the landlord.

It was not slavery. They simply did not own land but had basically unlimited usufruct.

Also I did not study some "become history teacher crap", I went with pre- and early history since my plan was to become an archeoligist, specialized on Europe.

Yeah I dropped out after ~2 years, since my grandma had severe cancer and I deemed it more important helping her and spending her last time with her more important.

Yeah so what - people read and tell others what they read about. Look it up yourself, as I said, instead of being a douchebag, shitposting on /pol/.

What reason would I have to make shit up and lie my arse off, huh? For the lulz or what?

Whatever it is late and finally a bit cooler in here, so I will lay down.

I hated that fucking cunt's guts. The most satisfying moment of the entire series was when Kenshin finally kicked his ass and left him live so his edgy philosophy would collapse on itself and he'd have to actually get a life.

Nevada and the Netherlands say otherwise.

also, what "money" would you have as a peasant. Your lord takes everything aside from what you need for bare survival.

Feudalism is fine until you interact with another society which is operating under a freer market system and get blown out by the superior technology they have developed because feudalistic systems suck ass at advancement.
>>
>>78740178
It's actually more like working your ass off for 1/4th of the year, and then doing whatever you feel like for the other 3/4ths

We work significantly more nowadays than at any other point in human history barring the early industrial revolution.

No one on this board who advocates for being the peasants in a feudal society should ever call anyone else a cuck. This is nearly the most submissive political affiliation you could have. You bash Communism and you're praising feudalism?

>Your lord takes everything aside from what you need for bare survival.

That's only if you are a merchant. Peasants usually had it pretty good as far as taxation was concerned. The real risk for them involved conscription.

Now comes the part where you insist that I just fell for a kike ruse, and carry on with your revisionist roleplay, because you desperately want to escape your current reality where you're a complete failure, and would rather blame your shortcomings on some boogeyman ("bogeyman" for you cucks) and convince yourselves it's all capitalism/feminism/kikes/nigger's faults that you're retarded slobs.

Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is physically impossible; that's where the saying comes from and why it exists.

When you tell someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, you're literally telling them to go do the impossible.

Why is feudalism assumed to be antonymous with the free market?
Many Austrian economists (the freest market) advocate its return due to the protection of private property rights above all.
The era is wrought with misconception.

But they CAN legalize prostitution in every city. It just needs to come up on the ballot and people vote on it, or your legislators need to stop being sticks in the mud.

Making it illegal just makes it more dangerous for one.

>Why is feudalism assumed to be antonymous with the free market?
You can't really start a business or do much if you give half your produce to the lord so he either uses it or sells it to turn a profit in exchange for the right to live in his personal land and you need his permission for everything. Feudalism fell apart once merchants and traders started making more money than their lieges.
>>
>>78753907
Says who?
The nature of feudal government was private property; that is, the title of the lords were seen as their private property, in contrast with today's notion of the government being a public institution.
If the lord were to breach the private property of his people, then his own rights were subject to the same.
This is just one element of a large system, under which property rights were sacred.
As I said, the popular conception of the middle ages is largely false.
>>
>>78753739
>why are oligarchic restrictions on the economic roles of individuals antonymous with the free market
Because they are quite literally contradictory.

No matter how you structure feudalism, its defining aspect is the fact that the obligations of serfs are strictly defined and enforced and the control is strictly managed by the government (usually a monarch). The free market means the FREE market, i.e. as little regulation as possible (ideally none), not just "something someone calling themselves an economist said."

You have no idea what you're talking about. It's evident that you never studied the era, as you're regurgitating a vague narrative I'm sure you heard on the history channel or something.
Income today is taxed exponentially more than any rate imposed during the middle ages.

>>78754291
Serf obligations come from the land ownership of the nobles i.e. private property ownership.
See this post>>78754199
Serfs were free after a period of working the land. Once they were, they were free to move, start enterprises, and even purchase their own land and become low noblemen themselves.
You're grossly overstating the institutional power that lords had. It was moreso over their land than their tenants.

if we are to entirely put aside the ridiculous mortality rates to pretty much everything, they didn't have it too bad in terms of labour and had plenty of free time and it only gets easier when you go further up the chain, land owners, anyone with a craft, and nobility had it even easier.

of course there's the constant warring and need for soldiers, and all other things that cause death, but that's all the big negatives i can think of.
>>
>>78754947
Can we implement a modern feudal system successfully?
>>
>>78755033
Nah, the capitalists are far richer than they were due to increased efficiency. They would never let it happen.
>>
>>78755033
classic feudalism had everyone much closer to the king, they all knew the king depends on them but they also all depended on the king, and there was the aspect of honour and serving your family or bloodline by gaining the respect of higher-ups and thus securing a better starting point for future children

what we have currently could technically be called a remote form of feudalism, since the "kings" own just about everything, including the government, and they would be entirely useless without the labour and funds of the vast populous beneath them, but there's no honour and no impressing the king, as most people don't even know the king exists
>>
>>78754768
It doesn't matter what you call the entity restricting your rights, whether you call it "the government" or whether you call it "private land owners" the existence of an obligation is entirely contrary to the very heart of the free market. What you're describing sounds like a federalist structure where the relationship between state (in this case, feudal lords) and individuals is the execution of near-absolute power and then focusing on how the relationship between the government and state is pretty normal.

Our current lives are empty and devoid of meaning. We look at our society and feel disgust. Why wouldn't we want to see it destroyed?
>>
>>78737618
Not necessarily feudalism, but Neo-confucianism pretty much..

I've never had things so "familiar" explained in such detail and ease before, yet "Confucius" is one of those things people look at and are like "So obscure and indecipherable". I'm the product of living on an island off the east coast, and I'm from a culture that is conservative, because we've been relatively isolated because we keep to ourselves. He calls it "Propriety", but we understand it as "honour". Chivalry and Bushido are very similar. I came into confucianism, because I already had an ideology laid out, and confucianism surprised me, because it was the only thing that basically reworded everything I've ever written true.
>>
>>78755440

Wouldn't you say this is a result of the world as we know it becoming much bigger, though?
As we have some form of global feudalism where the individual lords own far more workers and land.

True, it is difficult to invade something where the power is not centralized in one place. Best you can do is take over parts one by one instead of going directly to the capital where the law, money and leaders are.

Economic advancement was impossible unless you changed your identity and started a new life, because your family name was inherently tied to a very narrow choice of careers and fixed economic and social lifestyles. If you're a poorfag now you'd still be a poorfag under a feudal system, and you'd probably have less rights and personal freedom even as a man.
>>
>>78737618
You can't go back to feudalism as it was. The social structure existed only due to the limitations of technology. As tech advances, so must the society in order to compete with other ones. Ever notice that cavalry stopped wearing armor? It wasn't because they were trying to get killed. Tech advanced further than the advantages of armored knights.

how about those london registries showing one adult in four dying a violent death? which is huge seeing how diseases competed with killers on who can get the guy first?

how about explaining how crime levels were lower than today in an age before forensics? getting away with murder was almost guaranteed. they knew very well what they were up against, hence the cruel punishments; when the probability of getting caught is low, the cost of getting caught must be driven up.
