This must be semi old info. It's right about it being constant, but since then we've found out the caldera blows very consistently once every 600,000~ years. We've been able to map the ash cloud from every single eruption. The last time it erupted was 640,000 years ago. It's due to blow.
>>
The odds of Earth getting sterilized by an Asteroid are much higher than a supervolcano actually causing an extinction event. There's little evidence to suggest a supervolcano could even do this.

While it's likely that most Americans would die from the blast, ash or nuclear winter, around the globe there would be many people to survive the impending ice age. Keep in mind, even in the teeth of an ice age, glaciers don't cover all of North America.

The amounts of sulphur put into the atmosphere would cause a volcanic winter, which with VEI-8 eruptions normally last for up to a decade - temperature drops of around 10C would decimate crops and habitats across the world.

>but in a worst case scenario, there would be massive starvation and a total shift of where crops need to grow
We wouldn't be able to grow grops, as there would be a global drop in temperatures. As well as this, the area that would immediately go up in the eruption, the US bread-basket, would be annihilated.

>people near the ash zone will likely become peaceful refugees in another state or fucking spend their time shoveling ash and wearing gas masks
With the amounts of ash that would deposited, buildings would collapse and methods of transport to get out of the area wouldn't work due to the ash concentration.

>we wont be buried in a fucking winter that freezes the planet and kills everyone
Except this is what would happen. We wouldn't necessarily go out overnight, but in a drawn-out horrible way.

The areas that feed most of those 400 million people are in purple and orange on that map. Even if the ash cloud didn't create an artificial winter -- which it seems like it almost certainly would based upon the dislocating effects of the Tambora eruption -- there would be no harvests for at least a couple of years. You're not growing shit in the most fertile area of the continent.

During the last ice age people lived in Väster/Österbotten due to the gulfstream so we will be fine.
And for it to create a mini iceage the eruption would have to last for weeks. No way of knowing how much eruptable magma that is in the chamber.

It's what is called a "super volcano," there are a small handful of them around the world. They are fucking huge, erupt explosively and send an ash cloud pretty much around the world. Obviously, nobody has ever seen one erupt, so we have no real idea what conditions might signal an imminent eruption. But disaster cultists like to pretend that every fluctuation at Yellowstone is a sure sign that it is gearing up for an eruption.

Given the geological record of how rare eruptions are, there is little chance that any of them will erupt before we are all sleeping with the ancestors. But if there WAS an eruption, destruction would be on a gigantic scale, and effects would be felt globally, notably in a probable mini-ice-age.

Considering Yellowstone erupting was some scare craze for a while, it makes sense that the U.S. decided to make a plan if it should occur. Which would probably include climate models after the eruption, to find the best regions to start growing food now that America's bread basket is under ash. Seed storage has always been a thing and we'll definitely be getting resources from other countries.

However, those maps with such a large ash range are assuming that Yellowstone will erupt in the most powerful way it has erupted in the past. Yellowstone has erupted many times of differing power. Last I read, the consensus of most people that study that caldera, don't expect Yellowstone to erupt with such power (if ever it will erupt again).

At this point, those range maps are basically worst-case-never-gonna-explode-with-that-power-anymore situation. It's the boogeyman of Americans that's pushed by paranoid radio hosts and sensationalist authors.

Yellowstone is not a normal volcano with a peak and everything. Instead, it is basically one huge underground lava lake that if it were to explode, it wouldn't let off the pressure gradually - it would blast off a huge area of more or less flat land. The explosion would be so sudden that it would be felt all the way in the east coast, and maybe even Europe. Yellowstone is some next-level shit. Also, the explosion would be enough to trigger a few if not all of the volcanoes around the ring of fire. In other words, if it blows, we're fucked.

Probabilities do not work that way in either case. Odds are what they always are -- remote in the extreme -- for an eruption in the next century.

At the moment, there is no evidence that any huge new lava reservoir is forming up under Yellowstone, so an immediate eruption is fantasy doomsday shit.

Plants can already survive a winter -- a super volcano would cause a worse and somewhat longer winter, followed by a period of generally milder weather. Other than those killed around the eruption (meaning within several hundred miles, downwind) it will be a challenge that needs dealing with, but that's all.

Do you have a contingency plan for what you would do if giant mutant ants came swarming out of your closet? It is only slightly less likely than an eruption of Yellowstone with no warning in or lifetimes.

Both would be really, really bad if they happened, neither is worth wasting a lot of time making plans. If a huge new magma reservoir starts to form, then we can start making plans, we'll probably only have a few centuries warning, but maybe we can plan something in that time.

That is not a plan you've put together for ants, it is a general-purpose plan to deal with a certain class of problem. That's a fine idea, everybody ought to have a general survival plan, but planning for a specific highly unlikely disaster means you are wasting time and energy and resources that could have been put to better use.

it's not random probably, its a cycle. And the yellowstone eruptions aren't responsible for ANY of the flood basalt in the area, so "lava" isn't the major agitator of these events. Besides, the word you are looking for is magma, which they did find has been growing. Just google magma under Yellowstone, it's even bigger than the plume under Hawaii.
