Why are Americans so obsessed with Marines? It seems like everywhere I look in american culture Marines are hailed as America's greatest warriors. Im also pretty sure my girlfriend is cheating on me with a former marine.

Someone redpill me on marines? Are they basically special forces
>>
What's wrong with being proud of our military?

The marines predate the United States of America

Marines are recruited from jails and insane asylums for bloodlust
>>
Civilians think Marines are some sort of special forces within the Army. They are just over hyped sailors that get to do stuff on land sometimes. They also spend more time on their uniforms than anything else. Perception is what it all comes down to.

Maybe instead of violating the rules here you should look up some history, like the battles of Chapultepec or Guadalcanal.

I think it must be the uniforms then. I remember when there were a bunch of marines in my city for some event and my girlfriend kept commenting on how good they looked in their dress uniforms. That was about nine months ago and we just had our first child. Did I get cucked?

Marketing, US Mil has a huge marketing campaign. A lot of the "support the troops" memes are actually payed by the military. NFL has it in every game iirc.
>>
Mahreen here
very unmoto so I'd say I'm not super biased

With that being said Marines are not on the level by any means of special forces. The SF community is a very small elite section of the military. However due to are size we are more effective for large scale warfare then SFs.

As far as vs army, navy, and air force. We absolutely are far away and better in every aspect. We have always been but in recent times that gap has become larger and larger. All components if the military are being softened today but are highers are doing all they can to fight against it.
>>
>>78715844
>Are they basically special forces

No, more like Army reserve.
>>
>>78715844
From what i've experienced, most marines are fucking loud mouths who will never let you forget in ways both subtle and unsubtle what bad asses they were. Which is probably true. And since they spend so much time parading about their bad assitude, the bravado eventually rubs off on everyone they come in contact with. The hype is real, so I don't really get pissed off over it at all.
>>
>>78718506
The army in general is a joke senpai. Not good at what they do, let alone the weekend warrriors.

I do have respect for the AF there good at what they do then, the Navy is on a okay level. But the army holly fuck they are litteraly a shit show
>>
>>78718093
Sailor here

Pretty much this. The Marines are smaller, and have fewer support specialties than the Army. Their narrow focus, and smaller numbers have allowed them to maintain higher standards than the other services, especially the Army. It's not that the Army sucks, there are thousands of highly skill and highly professional soldiers, but as a WHOLE the Army cannot maintain standards like the Marines and hope to man all of the jobs that they have to staff to function. The Army is HUGE, and varied. Marines are small and specialized--that usually always means higher standards, whether military or any other profession.

Marines care more about the tightness of their uniform creases than the tightness of their shot group.
>>
>>78718506
More like an entire branch of Army Rangers--it's really the closest comparison that can be made--they're not "elite" compared to JSOC stuff, but they have higher standards than the regular rank and file.

Marines and the mc itself goes out their way to hype themselves up. They have all sorts of dumb shit legends for how bad ass they are. They aren't sf, they are just light infantry really, the organization is unique in that it completely revolves around the infantry. That being said I have met many good marines who weren;t koolaid drinking moto heads.

>entire branch of rangers

holy shit you must be beyond retarded

This is the most retarded thing I've heard. Maybe you guys are army rangers in terms of sleeve rolling ability, but time and time again a battalion of rangers has been proven to be superior to a battalion of regular infantry marine grunts.

>10/10, took the bait

I should have said "ranger qualified". There are plenty of Marines that do jobs and have skill sets nowhere near an actual Ranger battalion.

>>
>>78720486
The ASU, or so I've heard, was the pet project of some general's wife who thought the civil war uniforms looked sexy as shit.

In concept it's an interesting idea, but
>patches removed, instead unit pins
>fuck all tailoring by the average joe
>civil war shoulder boards

They need to sit down and scrap the whole fucking thing. Bring back real leather shoes, eliminate berets for everyone, only for """real""" berets (think rangers), and just unfuck it all. WWII has some slick ass uniforms, they need to bring those back.
>>
It's all about mission scope and budget. The Corps' mission is high surf zone to 80 miles inland. We get used in other ways because we are smaller and more mobile as an org. The Army has units that have the same deployment readiness standards like the ranger reg. and 82nd. But as a whole the Army is slower because it is massive. Plus the Army is an occupying force, they take space and fortify. The Coprs gets used as a shock troop to attack and move forward and often depends on the Army's log pac. We don't have the greatest military on the planet due to our infantry but because our logistics train is fucking legit. Source I'm a grunt. 2/7 oorah.

>basically special forces

Ok, so probably a troll thread but I'm a layman's expert here so...

The Corps really, technically shouldn't exist. It has a proud history and all, but it doesn't serve a purpose. Anything the Corps does, the army can do, often times better, except with a massive logistical apparatus and more funding behind it. Indeed it has traditionally been the army at the "tip of the spear" and the army at the helm of major amphibious assaults despite what Marine Corps propaganda says. When the Marines lost Ramadi, Army units had to capture it twice. This is because of unit specialization. As for why the Corps still exists -- as for any government organization -- they constantly justify their existence to the fed, often times via a massive propaganda arm. Though the Marine Corps original purpose is merely a vestige in the wake of its now quasi-army structure.

I'll give gung-ho marines this: By virtue of their size and focus on riflemanship, their infantry units are, on average, a bit more effective than Army infantry units in some combat scenarios. That said, there are a lot of army infantry units who, by virtue of their specialization and funding, however minute an advantage, are way more effective in other environments.

But the quasi-special forces meme propagated by morons regurgitating prropaganda is in its entirety a fabrication.

In order to provide fresh blood to the armed forces, Americans have a large military establishment, it's become an entire culture.
These are mostly conservative, white, ra-ra-Americans who speak with regional accents of some type or another.

This culture is supported by military movies, military books, and a spirit of nationalism in the schools (not ethnic nationalism unfortunately, more like "muh Constitution")

Because in these places the military is so idolized, there are millions of "pretend soldiers" and "wanna be tough guys" who worship the military and military veterans despite being to pussy to join themselves. These are the kind of people that join militias, prep for WW3 and participate in gun culture. (Actual veterans are like celebrities in gun culture)

These are the people that worship the Marines. Because the Marines are supposedly the best of the best, the ultimate badass soldier (gorilla warfare, 300 confirmed kills). Many of these people have an obsession with them that borders on unhealthiness.

And of course there's the fact that the Marine Corps does do a lot of dangerous shit, and their standards really are a lot higher than the other branches. Lots of dead marines unfortunately, not so much in the Chair Force or the Navy

Why not the army? I like their values, and they are different from the Marines.

I like the military for its discipline and values, but I'd rather not be a pawn and die when I can use my intelligence to make a bigger difference.

Chairforce 2nd Lieutenant checking in.

Marines are retards, they're literally cannon fodder.

The only reason they are hyped up so much is so that people will continue to enlist so we have bullet sponges out there to fight ground wars when needed. If we treated them like the human meat bag cattle they really are then no one would enlist and our ground warfare would suffer due to a lack of enlisted men.

The hype and the bravado is literally just so that we can keep the numbers up. Marines are retarded and worthless.

Airman here, all the services are similar in function, just different names for the same shit.

That being said I respect marines more than any other service as far as discipline and "militarized shit" goes because they do it best. As the sailor dude said, they have the highest standards because they're the smallest and thus it was a lot easier to maintain their culture over the past few hundred years. Army was fucking garbage though, the biggest fuckups I ever met were always from the army. Whether it's breaking the law, drugs, failing PT Evals and overall being a dipshit, the army always got first place.

Yeah, except when you need cannon fodder, like you have admitted yourself. Cannon fodder is a strategic necessity, so it is heroic, whether you like it or not. It's certainly more heroic than doing some desk job or killing people from safety like artillery squads do.

As a Marine and based on my experiences, the Marine Corps has better Jr. NCOs. Marine Infantry aren't better man to man than an Army Infantry unit, but they have slightly better leadership than the Average at the small unit level.

This is entirely because the Marines is smaller though and actually has more money to spend on Schools.

The Army is fine though, the Infantry guys are hardcore. Army pogues howerver, can tend towards FAR worse than Marines.

>>78719919

As a prior Armyfag I have to agree. The Marines are far more geared to be an expeditionary fighting force, while Army is large scale operations. Granted the Army is far more diverse in occupations and generally is the logistical center of the military (POGs). There is a small percentage of the Army (like 1%) that does the same shit as Marines, and SOCOM is primarily Army-side in terms of numbers, but it is a joint effort.

I was Aviation and we worked with Rangers and Marines quite a bit in Afghanistan, the inexperienced ones were always arrogant. We had a small group of SEALS (tier 2) and rangers on one mission and the rangers were like a bunch of kids compared to the seal guys. Those guys were super professional and easy to work with, definitely on a different level.

Yeah I'll give you an example how the Marine Corps is geared differently. Marine Rifle squads have 3 fire teams, 13 men, and only have Rifles Native. 240s, Rockets, any of that shit is attached.

The Marine Corps uses squads more like how the Army uses a platoon.

The Marines requires a higher level of fitness BEFORE you even join. People who don't pass are rejected and join other branches. Of those that are accepted, there is still a high drop out rate compared to other branches. In the marines everyone is an infantry man FIRST, then you take secondary training for your specialty. http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/story/military/2016/06/21/new-marine-corps-fitness-standards-combat-weed-out-men-women-alike/86169826/

The marines, by structure and doctrine, are more geared to be a rapid reaction force, whereas Army is not so much, except for SOCOM units of course.

Note how I'm not actually talking about effectiveness.

It's a far more heroic and honorable feat these days to get a good job that benefits your community and your country, get a good wife and then have and raise good children who will do the same.

there are no wars right now threatening the safety of the USA that require you to enlist - the most important war we can fight right now is from home.

If you're enlisting into a specific MOS to learn a trade as I did as an Air Froce Aviator then I can understand that - its a job that applies both in the military and in the real world.

Now every dudebro and high school drop out joins the marines and then pretends that they're gods gift to america and expects everyone to suck their dick for choosing the easiest path available to them.

Because of Hollywood. My father was a marine, and I do respect the marines, but only as being the second-best army in the world, behind the United States Army that I and nine generations of my ancestors served in, from the Honorable Military Company of Massachusetts to today.

>largest amphibious assault ever: u.s. army at normandy
>75% of all wwii fighting in euro theater; half of pacific handled by army anyway

By and Large in today's times it's a cop out decision for idiots who can't hack it at home and want structure, food, a bad and license to say that they are better than everyone else for literally no other reason than signing their life over to someone else out of hte pure laziness of their hearts.

I almost never mention my service and i endeavor not to because it doesn't define me. I made my decision to join the AF purely as a career decision and in a few more years I can resign my commission after my obligation is paid off and then I can live a comfy life as a civilian aviator and get paid twice as much for half the hours and two thirds less bullshit.

That is however, all subject to change depending on the industry and weather or not we get into it with any big players out there.

USMC is not a special force, it's basically a department of the navy. Specifically it exists as a "force in readiness" that can be mobilized and deployed anywhere in the world very rapidly. The entire point is to be able to hold a position long enough for the army to catch up (since they're slowpokes in comparison). They're not a replacement for the army, just a complement.
The other main difference is that every Marine is a rifleman first and foremost, before any other MOS that he selects. That's not the case with army and other branches.
And USMC does have its own special forces (Force Recon).
Btw, ASVAB requirement is higher for USMC than army. That means the Corps gets to cherrypick and isn't necessarily stuck with the dumbest (so the old tyme "jarhead" moniker doesn't really apply as much). I'm not saying they're all brainiacs either. Then again, it depends on the MOS (each has its own requirements).
Also the Corps has other duties like guarding ships and embassies, but what I mentioned above is its main purpose.
Hope that clears things up. I'm american and was in during first gulf "war" (better times, the calm before the storm) so probably various things have changed, like whether or not women are allowed in grunt units, and if they're still allowed to sing the same colorful cadences during PT runs. Hell at this point, the recruits at Parris Island probably have their own safe spaces!

I'm a Marine infantryman myself. I honestly think the reason is due to the great marketing and awesome uniforms. And I honestly think we are just as good as Army Rangers, we did a training exercise up in Bridgeport California with them and kicked their fucking asses

I don't know why we're obsessed with Marines, but it feels good.
Btw, it's mostly shitbags who go around flaunting the EGA, because I do my best to seem like a normal civilian around civilians.

they're definitely not the best
but they have always been the loudest.

they are always assigned at the front
to absorb the attacks.
because they are just that "special".

There was a marine and a ranger in my platoon at jump school 21 years ago this week. They both did great. The ranger had a little bit of a more quiet confidence and greater physical endurance. The marine was good at faking it until it was real and was not one to quit. They seemed pretty typical in my experience.

Lowest skill branch, least technalogically advanced, most likely to literally be shot at and indeed shot or blown up. We don't draft anymore, so all Marines are there of their own free will. Marketing is a hell of a drug.

I don't oppose the military. I just oppose using citizens as a mere means to an end. I oppose the human wave / meat grinder strategy. It's disgusting and we should be better than that. Our citizens should be better than to accept that.

Delta force is an Army branch.

The motherfuckers that do the most say the least. Says enough about USMC/SEALS.

I'm going into the Marines as soon as I reach the physical requirements (I'm functionally scrawny) because my father figure was a Marine although I've been told the Air Force and/or Navy would be better for me mentally (I'm slightly smarter than average in a town with few genuinely smart people).

They are stupid civilians who have never even considered joining any branch of the military

The marines aren't nearly what they are cracked up to be.

They are just an amphibious offshoot of the navy, who live every other branch, can't do jack shit without the other branches

>Why are Americans so obsessed with Marines?

Marines are all the high school football jocks who couldn't get into college.

They are loud and dumb, which is why they are used as cannon fodder to protect our legitimate military forces
>>
Girls like to play dress up, Marines spend more time than most US military branches on their uniforms, so girls like that sort of shit.

Also, Most of my US buddies who are/were Marines are actual homosexuals.
