When the war was nearing its end and Germany was pretty much dead in the water the Allied and the Soviets bombed the ever living shit out of Germany's remaining strategic transportation infrastructure.
There by making it nearly impossible to supply any camp. Meaning everybody started starving to death. Among the starvation illness grew and typhus started breaking out.
When it became clear that the war was lost camp guards mostly abandoned their posts. But they where unable to release the prisoners because in most camps typhus was wreaking havoc.
