Just consider how much time it would take to learn and MAINTAIN 20 languages on a conversational level. Because learning alone isn't enough, you need to maintain your language skills, unless you want to forget them. It means grammar exercises, reading, listening. It takes A LOT of time.

and trust me - keeping a language active requires a lot of effort - if you know german and dutch for example you have days where you can speak and understand dutch and days when you can speak and understand german. practically any language you have learned can be "activated" in a week or so of active use, but its really hard to maintain speakable level with most. and since people dont speak more than 2-3 languages usually its quite easy to say 2-3 words in a language that is new to them (without speaking the language) and then they start praising you and saying you are a polyglot. its easy to start riding the fame - ive had quite a lot of situations where i started believing i really speak somethign because people near me say "oh you speak everything" and then having quite a lot of difficulty speaking the actual language when i had to. but if he was some sort of a teachers pet or something - its really easy to just have him have credentials he doesnt have to make the institution seem interesting

I'm all for encouraging people to learn more languages than just sticking with their native one only.
In my personal experience people who are actually working hard and doing well with a language tend to be pretty humble about their language abilities (the more you know the more you realize what you don't know, etc.).
The people I've met who maybe took a 101 class once then stopped studying, or only know how to say Hello, How are you, Goodbye are the ones running around bragging about how many languages they know.

I'm half english half swiss, my parents both speak German (with my actual swiss parent speaking dialect) so they just both spoke english around the house. As a result I ended up knowing fairly broken but conversational german.
Tried to start learning dutch and given the 1 or 2 letter difference in some words between dutch and german i just gave up and strengthened my german instead

Probably by learning the kana, then by starting on the grammar and learning the basic 100 kanji or so. Find a lesson somewhere like Tae Kim's or whatever works for you.
The verbs are the complex part of the language. They're conjugated for pretty much everything including tense, aspect, respectfulness, ability, etc. The nouns and adjectives are quite simple, you just put a suffix on nouns to indicate case and a connecting particle on adjectives. The pronunciation is the easiest part and the vowels are basically the same as your language so that wouldn't be much of a problem. The real difficulty is learning over two thousand kanji and the multi-character compounds that make up the vocabulary.
