Technically we can't do that because freedom of religion is one of the reasons we decided to be our own country.

Religious groups have basically made religions above the law in western countries. They will oppose anything like that because they are terrified of having to pay tax.
You would be amazed at how many crazy cults are around that you never hear about. No one wants the political fallout of stopping one because they will just drag mainstream religions into it as there's no way to prove one religion is more legitimate than others.

The thing is the US seems to consider separation of church and state as religious entities are exempt from all laws.
