Geography.
For the most part, America is a vast monolingual nation, the contiguous part of it that is. Think of the UK. As I understand it, most students in the UK learn French and German on top of English, or whatever other languages they wish to learn. Americans may only get 5-6 years of optional language education if they are lucky. Barring college, most high school students will have 2 years tops of compulsory foreign language education. Why is this important? Well, language is a vehicle of culture and the less exposure one has to a different people/nation/culture's language, the one less has exposure to culture itself.
That being said, people from Ohio and Texas are vastly different, but not linguistically albeit there are variations in cadence, accent, and slang, etc. There is more of a difference in material culture and in customs and that sort of thing.
New Mexico is technically our only bilingual state with both Spanish and English enshrined in law. Alaska is our only multilingual state enshrined in law as it recognizes English and certain Native Alaskan languages of which there are many.
Another great example are the Northern Europeans. Most Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, and Icelanders I have met speak their native tongue, English, German, and sometimes another language, usually something funky like Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.
Aside from exposure to people who speak Spanish and French, American is not bordered by various countries with differing cultures and languages. There is no necessity to learn a foreign language here. One could argue that you only need to learn English anyway as it's become the contemporary lingua franca usurping French's role as the language of business, industry, entertainment, etc.
Anyway, sorry to ramble, I studied Greek, Latin, and Syriac on-and-off in jr high, high school, and college. I don't remember much of it.

Suburbanization combined with parents being terrified of letting their young children leave the house. This creates a situation where a) kids never leave the house or b) they only stay in their front/back yard as they cannot walk or bike anywhere meaningful due to crappy city planning. Because of this they aren't exposed to the real world or other people create a very narrow perspective of the world. If Americans were to honesty reflect on themselves I suppose we'd admit that our society doesnt push or promote other cultures. We've been generally self contained and haven't felt any real need to learn about others. There's an underlying arrogance and confidence knowing the world will simply adopt our way of doing things.
I do think many are aware of other cultures and respect what they offer from fashion to food to anime and technology.
