As for arguments, the only legitimate argument I've seen was one of personal costs to people for having EU items, however that too is fear-mongering (your drivers licence has a EU symbol on the top, INVALID *hurf blurf*)
And a lot of the feelings towards the UK has been "it's dissolving" and "I'm ashamed to be English" despite trying to reason that Scotland will have a large uncontrollable issue with Spain vetoing their entry.

I too am in favor of a strong, united Europe. But I am firmly opposed to a cryptofascist EU dictatorship. Europe should be organized on international, not supranational basis.

While you're right in saying that the process could've been stopped or radically altered until then, I would say the post-war integration process was doomed from the start. The European founding fathers were all hardline European federalists that wanted a united states sort of supercountry. Monnet, Coudenhove-Kalergi, Spinelli etc. were all globalists. Their concept of spill-over was meant, from the start of the integration, to expand the European Communities' competences to as many areas as possible.
I guess we could say there was still a chance to 'save' the EU project between the failure of the European Political Community in 1954, and the success of the Single European Act in the late 80's.
