Probably wouldn't happen with the US. UK/Can/Aus/NZ could do it but that's because we're at similarish wealth levels (With UK being the poorest of the bunch, especially now...) and we have more similar views, government, culture and size. US is similar but the odd one out on every point.
US isn't so culturally different that it wouldn't work, it would just make thing more difficult. But the US is a lot richer atm and will probably stay that way for the next couple decades, we'd experience massive brain drain into the US if we had freedom of movement. We'd integrate very easily into the US compared to other countries and wouldn't cause any problems, so the US would straight up gets a ton of skilled labour for free while our home countries are training people for no benefit to themselves. And the sad fact is, with one much much bigger country in the group (US 318m population, The rest 126m combined), it's just going to cause any kind of agreement made to be way too far in their favor. It would be like the Empire all over again except with the US as the top dog and it's not as fun the other way around. The UK would be the biggest in the group without the US, but at least the others could team up and outnumber us, with the US all the rest could team up and would represent only a quarter of the union.
We already have the commonwealth with us all in it. But we obviously can't make that a stronger union because there's a bunch of other much poorer countries with very dissimilar cultures in it that we don't want immigrating here en masse. We should just make the commonwealth have completely free trade and add a higher tier that when your is GDP > X you can move around freely with the other countries.
I've always liked the idea, especially if the US stayed out of it - but it would better to have an anglo union with the US than not have one at all.

I like the visa-on-arrival setup we have with NZ. Each side can change the conditions of it to suit their needs and influence movement patterns (limit access to welfare, require health insurance, no pathway to citizenship, that sort of thing). But handle free trade, free movement, defence cooperation, etc. all separately. Fuck this EU setup of one massive pact to rule them all. The U.S. should just annex Mexico (and Guatemala, for best border to control), and make an iron-clad alliance with Canada.
