Firstly, urban areas appear to attract crime like a damned magnet. Makes sense; pretty tough to make a "living" off of entitlement programs and petty crime out on the sticks or even a small town.
Secondly, minority populations are much more likely to be concentrated in these areas. If I remember right, my county is around 73 percent white and we don't see very many issues from it. Plenty of spots in inner cities have a much, much higher proportion of blacks.
To be fair, I've never been the victim of a violent crime, and I go to Atlanta a fair amount for music shows. You get the occasional guy that you figure is trying to scope you out and see if you're a good mark, of course.
