So right now I'm 20 and I'm NEET but I have thought often of going to a Vocational School and becoming a welder, unlike the rest of the people my age here falling for the university meme. What's your views on welding? Is it a respectable field to work in and should I engage this line of work or is it too degenerate and I should seek another field of work?
>>
>>78624918

Don't know jack shit about welding, but it sounds respectable enough to me.
>>
>>78624918

You'll lose your eyesight at a young age but hey, theres plenty of hospitality corn to go around.
>>
>>78624918
It's a respectable career. A lot better than going to study sociology.
>>
>>78624918
not the unions. the unions are degenerate.
>>
>>78624918
>What's your views on welding? Is it a respectable field to work in and should I engage this line of work or is it too degenerate and I should seek another field of work?
Shit man, what much is there to say about fucking welding? You're going for a blue collar job, doing actual, tangible work. Nothing degenerate or dishonorable in it.
>>
>>78624918

Do you even know what the word degenerate means you stupid cock?
>>
>>78624918
its a perfectly respectable job that will pay you well and actually you are already probably much smarter than most university students already simply because you realize that going to a vocational school is very often a much better decision than college/university. I do think that you should take a glance at some other vocational school options and take the one that gives you the best combination of enjoyment and pay
>>
>is x degenerate

when will this meme end. would your granddad have asked someone this?
>>
>>78624918
My father works in Navy shipyards as a foreman and welders are a dime a dozen there. The turnover rate is pretty huge there, can't say for other work places though.
>>
Why not electrician, or HVAC, some other trade instead.

I don't think most welding jobs pay super well.

Handy-Man Crafts are the most redpilled things out there.

If you want fat dosh then go for pipe-welding, it is pretty fucking hard to make a good pipe-weld without any leak and without damaging the pipe, so it is quite a small workforce and fuck it pays good.

If you want an even better paying job then go as a "Lienero" In english it would be someone who works with Power Lines, not many have the balls to climb an electrical pole and then be so close to High-Tension live lines.

Pro tip, if your hands arent rugged and adorned with scars with the grip of a bear then you are a cuck.Nothing feels better than crushing some nu-males hands with your strong workman grip or having your hands complimented for being so fucking rough
t. Handy spic

Who rough hands here?

If I was going to pick a trade. Based on what I hear Commercial roofing and screen printing are where it's af
>>
>>78624918

I weld (self taught) im not a pro or anything but i make $25 an hour doing it so im not complaining.
>>
>>78624918
It's pretty good, unless you live in a state like California where the only people outside of unions that get jobs are immigrants. That was my mistake.

So, now I am considering going into the military as a welder because frankly, there is no other fucking option in this shit stain of a state.
>>
>>78627051
Join the Union you fucking rat. IBEW.
>>
>>78624918
It's extremely degenerate

Don't waste your mind by becoming some stupid blue collar laborer

Go to college and get your degree so you can make some money and be a respectable individual

Welders and all other blue collar workers are despised by everyone because they're morons and felons who are a drain on society

The world would be better off with less welders just think about that before you go throwing your life away on that "job"
>>
>>78626552
>Commercial roofing

maybe it's different in states that aren't FL, but holy hell is roofing the roughest shit to do as a job. it attracts a lot of illegals for the very reason it sucks so much shit, and takes a lot of workers to get done fast.

what state do you live in anon?
>>
>>78624918
no Welding is fine you can make dosh IF you are good at welding.
if you are going to go do this word of advice. expose yourself to all the process that your school has.
learn as much as you can from your instructors.
cause once you leave school you have to bank on what you learned for real world experience you lack.
also prep work is key for a good joint
>>
>>78626552

Someone either REALLY doesn't like you, or they're full of shit.
>>
welding is excellent work.

Take your safety seriously though; understand the health risks from certain materials or situations, and don't short cut on safety.

Welding properly is art. It requires careful planning and prep work.

Using your body and mind to create new things that are literally stronger than the metal they are made from is pretty fantastic.

If you're not set on welding, but are interested in the blue collar route, check out Mike Rowe (the dirty jobs guy), and "mikeRoweWORKS".

Mike Rowe wants to set people up with skilled trades in their area.

Commercial Roofer In British Columbia, I make 70 grand last year + company vehicle + 2 week paid vacation and decent benefits.
>>
>>78626552

Commercial roofing is so fucking hot. You practically die every day during the summer/early fall.
>>
>>78624918
i almost went into welding
you start out making like 30 an hour and depending on your "specialty" you make more money
you also breath in alot of shit fume and youll lose your eyesight by 50
ie i knew a guy who got certified in scuba diving and welding and he got a job fixing oil rigs under water and got payed 250 an hour but its also dangerous as fuck
>>
>>78624918

>Is Welding A Respectable Career

it is, but you have to get fully certified to be respectable

being able to push to plates together and weld them requires the intelligence of a money, make sure you get your Pressure B and so forth

but be ready to be nearly blind by 50-60

theres a reason why you dont see old welders that much in relation to other trades. It literally DESTROYS YOUR BODY

The filters dont 100% protect your eyes, by 40 you will have permenant dark spots in your vision.

If you weld stainless steel or anything with a zinc coating be prepared to later on carry an oxygen bottle with you as Stainless steel sits in your LUNGS FOREVER and no matter how much you cleanup the zinc coating theres still a little bit left and that shit will DESTROY your nerves

welding seems like a great trade and thats why it attracts all the morons
>>
Been welding for six years straight out of high school. Its a solid job. However, your eyesight will go to hell. And you better have a high tolerance for pain. You will get burned. The work pays fairly well though once you get a job at a good place. And most of the people in the field are very red pilled. Union work is a bonus due to security but unions themselves are cancer. Overall, its not perfect, but its not a bad option.
>>
>>78629336
you can become a CWI thou
you dont have to be a welder your entire life

>>
Different kinds of welders make different kinds of money.

Yes, it's a respectable field, I'd say. I've always looked up to people who can weld well every since I started building bicycles. Granted I braze, but whatever.

Yes the radiation is bad for your eyes and the fumes are bad for, well, everything, but with proper safety attire and practices these risks can be significantly minimized.

3M makes these great compact masks to wear under your headgear.
>>
>>78624918
>lose your eyesight at a young age
Bullshit. Plenty of 30 year welders where I work and they see as well as anyone else their age.

Yes, underwater welding is the way to go, work on ships, oil rigs, pipe lines, bridges, etc.

>Advantages
>------------------
>Awesome gear
>Breathing your own Oxygen vs fumes
>Get to Dive
>Work on awesome projects instead of in a factory
>Sent around the world for specific jobs
>
>No chance of setting yourself on fire

>Disadvantages
>---------------------
>Might be away from home a lot, but fuck it you make a lot more money than regular welder
>Takes a lot of practice and certifications
>>
>>78624918
Welding is a pretty metal job, pun very intended.
>>
>>78631187

Being an asshole, calling welds wrong, taking bribes. Its a small industry, people know eachother..and your name will get out there if you drag it through the mud.

Be a good person, get your certs.. PCN is the way to go.. make your money
>>
It's true man work. You need to learn about electrical currents, the chemistry of metals and shielding gases/flux, a little bit of math/geometry, and you need to have a very precise and steady hand. You'll learn how to operate various machinery like bits, saws, cutting torches, plasma torches, grind wheels, etc..

If you're a little bitch, don't consider it. You will get electrocuted. You will make direct contact with sparks and molten steel every day. You will develop a welder's cough and partial blindness after a few years. Gas tanks and metal plates are heavy as fuck.

As another anon suggested, pursue pipe welding for a boilermaker union or a shipyard.
>>
>>78629078
the anon i replied to definitely had an American flag?

anyway, that's totally different. not too bad if you're getting decent benefits, even better if your spouse is working too.

godspeed leaf

you can only underwater weld in the US for 15 years
fucks up your bones

Ran the same gambit you did about a decade ago, then got into underwater welding. If you can line everything up, do that. You will make more money than you know what to do with especially if your a smart spender/ investor. Retired from it two years ago for a cozy desk job in purchasing at a local utility company after I ruptured an ear drum in a car accident.
>>
>>78631704
The average career length for a dive welder is something like 3-4 years. They have to adjust their body to pressure using a barometric chamber for each dive. It takes a huge toll on your body. It's also the deadliest job in the world per capita.

Welding doesn't pay well unless you're union. If you join a union, enjoy years of grinding carbon steel and prepping joints for real welders for pennies, that is if joint prep isn't automated. Shit is hot and dirty.

More than likely you'd work for a fab shop which doesnt pay that well either being new to the trade.

There's specialist stuff but you don't just start as a specialist.

>>78631364
I know an underwater welder that makes 6 figures, some of the shit hes talked about sounds sketchy as all fuck though.

ITT: taking advice from "almost" successful people

Wearing protective gear is mandatory

So is making six figures.

If the decision is too hard, shitpost on 4 chan.

All work is degenerate, either bomb the white house or go home.
>>
>>78624918
Maybe try getting into machining. There is always good paying work for a competent lathe and mill operator plus you can get to keep you eyesight. This is skilled work though so don't expect to be pulling in the big money from the get go.
>>
>>78632541
Centrelink for life cunt, where's me durries?
>>
Welder here. Shipbuilder in promised-land Oregon, dad's best buddy was a welder for 40 years. He got me into it. Starting pay for non-union at the dockyards here is $25/hr for high school kids, goes up from there. Most of us make 50-75+/hr with seniority and skill. Join up!
>>
Welding like many blue collar jobs has a remarkably high turnover, mostly because of harsh working conditions

If you're willing to work for the same company for a long period of time and are reliable then you'll rake in fat stacks of cash
>>
Just be an electrician. You can make damn good money, there's good career paths (journeyman, master, etc) and you don't get fucked up by fumes and UV rays.
>>
>>78624918
Does education matter to you? generally if you're a welder you'll make bank but some of the stupidest people I know are welders but they really rake it in.
>>
>>78624918
welders are badass man. the masks, the welding shirts. they get paid and the shit is hard as fuck.
>>
>>78624918
It's respectable but it sucks. It's hot dirty work so be prepared for that.
>>
>>78633331
Or be a lineman. Dangerous as hell, but with all the safety precautions now it's not bad and I hear the money's decent.
>>
In my opinion there's nothing wrong with welding/factory work. I'm a software designer so I'm not really in the same situation, but your work is more important for the country than mine so I can't fault you. There's always going to be snobs who look down on you, but fuck them. You're doing real work.
>>
Trade jobs are great, I wouldn't call them careers. Welding sucks, it's hot and you get burned a lot. I ended up working in a factory welding overhead in trailers.

Shit pays a lot but I moved on. I like think of it like homeless insurance. There's no way I could be homeless as long as I can still run a lath and weld.
>>
>>78624918
Yes I'm 31 and getting ready to retire. I've been welding since I as 17. I've played it pretty smart financially. I've work on projects for the govt. as well as projects for very wealthy men who are in a space race. Welding is not limited to pipeline in oil and gas. You can get a job almost anywhere on earth if you have the skills to pay the bills and the work ethic. Above all your work ethic is one of the most important things in this field. People will notice when you are the first guy to arrive and the last to leave. I literally got two of the biggest breaks in my career because a company man who visited our shop regularly noticed my work ethic. If you want it go and get it.
>>
>>78630639
I literally do this job, but I just started and haven't gotten my certs yet.
What makes you think it's so great?
>>
I have had surgery on my knee and hip. I don't want to be in disability since I'm only 26. I'm thinking of a trade but don't know which one is easy on the knee.

The job prospects are better than blacksmith, and loomsmith, and wick dipper

Welding is a hobby now. Dark people and robots do it professionally
