First off, assault rifles are already banned. Look it up. AR15s are not assault rifles. They become deemed assault weapons with certain add ons that is a completely arbitrary definition.

Some of the Founding Fathers owned warships with cannon capable of levelling the cities of the time, others owned powerful field artillery. Many militiamen owned rifles and preferred them to muskets for their accuracy at long range.
The point of the Second Amendment is for the average citizen to be able to obtain weaponry comparable to the weapons of the military. That is why it mentions the militia and the security of a free state. The militia cannot protect the security of a free state today with muskets.
