There have been plenty of "socialist" politicians who have had degree in economics from prestigious universities. Take the Fabians for example.

College degrees in economics aren't worth shit. It's the equivalent of graduating from a medical school in the 15th century, it's not much help at all and the people getting these degrees are typically the worst types of people.
Smart people have done dumb stuff all through history, just look at the support communism and fascism enjoyed among the intelligentsia in the interwar period.
