Interesting, I was a conservative as a teenager, leftist in my early 20's and have reached a solid mid-point in my mid 20's that stands up to any scrutiny and experiences I have. I'm a left leaning independent.

I was never a leftist, ever.
Leftism always seemed like stupid idealism to me.
I remember that when I was 12 I wrote a short story about an ideal society in an underground city, and showed it to my dad. He told me it sounded awfully like communism and that it wasn't feasible and it would never work out because people are inherently competitive and ambitious, I talked with him and discussed and he taught me that leftism in general, socialism and communism are just wishful thinking ideologies that expect people to be robots programmed to conform and be good.
I remember very vividly how I understood that being rewarded for your efforts and being able to make yourself better than others was important, as my father was a capitalist that had gotten really far in life with his will and effort.
I've always considered leftists and commies stupid people, not because of their ideology itself, but because they're naive enough to think their ideology could ever work.

No I have always seen socialism as a forced thing. I think helping others is a good thing but being forced to help is just false solidarity and it does not really mean anything, I then came to the conclusion that it is better with a society were people help each other because they like each other.
