The day is drawing to a close and a numbness to what has happened slowly creeps in, as it always does, when the only available option is living through it.
I have called friends to discuss and share fears, I’ve posted on every form of social media (probably too much and with too much passion, for which I will not apologise as I hurt no one and spouted no hate and ‘with great and burning passion’ has always been my personal style). But the panic in my gut has subsided since I woke two hours early this morning like a child on Christmas day might, only sick with a very different emotion.
Yes, the panic ebbs, but the rage will not. I will never be calm about the willing brick to the face of our future that occurred today. Three-quarters of us who must now live the rest of our lives in the quagmire of this mess did not choose this.
In such turbulent times anger is easy, fear is easier still. Hope is hard.
The country was steered to this result today by those in power or in the public eye, supposed to be older and wiser. But today I have seen the reaction from my friends and my peers and young people who will one day lead this country, and to me there is more wisdom in our passionate, educated, considerate Facebook statuses and tweets than in any words spouted by the majority of players in this messy, unfinished game.
And therein lies the hope.
Try to tell me again how the the so-called ‘selfie generation’, is vain, shallow and apathetic when we are ever increasingly politically engaged with our futures and demanding of a better world in all areas. We are understanding, we are compassionate and we are coming for our futures. Now with a vengeance.
