I don't know much about it (I'm interested in buying a hunting rifle/shotgun in the future when my financials allow it, but no pistol), and I agree with background checks. I don't think there's anything wrong with prohibiting violent or repeat criminals from buying weapons. Sure there's some legal grey-area where an individual was wrongly accused of a violent crime or several repeat offenses that carry weight (like theft if that's possible) but the rarity of those cases will be so few and far between it doesn't seem like such a problem.
