Spanish (Castillian, really) Is like the king of mongrelized languages. Literally a mixture of Basque, old Leonese, Galician, Catallonian, and a pinch of arab.
Old Galician is probably the genuine latin language of the iberian peninsula. Basque was there since thousands of years ago, literally. Everything else is a mixture on different degrees with some local mutations.
I often think languages work pretty much like genetics.

That means many things:
1) Suppose you have millions to invest in a factory. Where will you put it. In Greece land or in Germany ? Note that the price of workers are roughly the same, the price of life roughly the same, most probably you'd need to import the mineral resources (and whatnot) from the north if you're in greek etc. You're therefore basically getting free factories from all of the regions of europe
2) Greece & co aren't part of the same area. You need to pay tariffs to export your products there. You create a factory there, which also gives them worker and control on their own production. Right now it's the exact contrary, where they anyway do not need to create anything, they can just improve the production in France or Germany, wherever they are established.
