EU isn't Europe. EU isn't even a significant portion of Europe. It is in fact an incredibly tiny bit of Europe but holds a disproportionate amount of power over hundreds of millions of people.
In order to have a continental union that's worth keeping, you'd have to solve the economic injustice that is perpetuated by capitalism. At the point in time where they decided that they couldn't let all members of the EEA vote on EEA matters because democracy was too complex if not centralized in the EU, I became an opponent of joining the EU.
And I am a leftie. I have no problem with immigrants (barely noticeable and add to our strength), no problem with free travel, no problem with easier access to academia and no problem with simple procedures to allow foreigners to stay and work, temporarily or permanently.
I also like what the EU has done with regards to European countries no longer being so damn vulnerable to US and Russian and other pressure.
But it's ultimately an half-ass democracy. There is not enough will to do things like the people's initiatives -or many other important things- PROPERLY. I don't think that the EU will survive in its current format. What they need to do is either roll back the government side of it and move towards a free-trade/free-movement union, or Federalize and write a real constitution. Look to Germany or America for how to run a Federal government with state governments beneath it.
I love Europe, it's a great collection of cultures and differing peoples and beliefs.
