In WWII and prior wars, you went as a unit, you were brothers in arms, and that camraderie helped you survive, and when you left the war zone, you went on a ship, with your unit, and you helped each other debrief. You talked to each other, you remembered friends of yours that were now gone, and you just helped each other cope with the shit.
Vietnam they decided your tour was up and just choppered your ass out by yourself alone, and you were stateside in 48 hours just thrown back into civilian life alone after having been in the jungle with everyone trying to kill you hours before.

Why is that suprising? The media at the time was against the war and wouldn't have cared much for that sort of footage being broadcasted. Here the vets weren't given a formal welcome home by their own government until 1987 and weren't permitted to march by most of the RSL branches around the country because the WW2 and Korean vets thought they were a disgrace. all wars are completely hellish. what keeps soldiers sane and fighting is the camaraderie between bros that stick together from training to combat, and unfailing trust in your comander. you're fighting to keep your bros alive. but vietnam was run like the human resources department for the most inefficient corporation. guys were constantly shifted around to fill made up quotas and metrics. commanders often didn't know their team by name and were only looking out for themselves and trying to get a promotion. so imagine, when you get deployed you're separated from your bros that you trained with, you don't really know who you're fighting with, you've seen your commander lie behind your back or cover up a bad decision that killed either civilians or team mates, you're rifle jams so unpredictably yet consistently that some guys are using dead vietcong rifles, and you don't even really know why you're here. the only friend you had on the team, the companion that gave you the courage to keep trudging through the jungle dodging random VC booby traps and ambushes, landed on a mine when jumping down from the tank to take a piss and part of his face fell in your lap. (they don't even allow you to grieve properly before rolling on - "man up, lets just kill more gooks"). and that's how you go berserk and become a raging gook killing and raping machine. you don't even care about your own life anymore. just pure rage incarnate. it seems completely random who lives or who dies day to day. then one week suddenly you're time's up and you're shipped out of the jungle back to Ohio.

It's not really a deferment if you actually have to do stuff. My dad was part of the Sea Bees, which apparently are part of the navy construction/engineering unit.
I've searched a couple times for things about the draft but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
My main question is if you were a conscript in the draft could you choose which branch you went into during Vietnam? If you could, than my dads decision to join the navy before the draft would decrease in importance, since he could have done the same thing after he was drafted.
