I think part of the problem is social media and the internet.
Prior to these things most women only really connected directly with those around them. As such, far more women were in that upper % of a group - small fish but small pond sort of thing.
This in turn means that many more women managed to have their innate narcissism satisfied on at least a local level.
Social Media however showed them that they really are just a very small fish in a very large ocean. They instead of looking locally for recognition, saw that the whole world could look at them...but isn't.
