"United we stand" was replaced by "black lives matter", and now those Bush years feel comfy AF, because at least he didn't feel like he had it out for western culture as a whole while he fucked the country to death in the name of his wealthy globalist backers.
With that, Stewart and Colbert just started feeling preachy and insufferable, with none of the subversive edge that they had in 2003-2007 and for that brief period in 2010-2011.

Colbert's problem is that he forgot the saying "don't ever meet your heroes". And he didn't do it just once, he does it almost every night.
Also, the whole motivation behind casual late night shows (ie seeing celebs in a casual setting) has been taken over by the Internet. On that note, Colbert also fucked up thinking that all people want to hear is him whining about evil conservatives. In reality, people wanted to see him make jokes about the media, not the things the media reports on. With TV overall declining (most of CNN are people checking twitter or facebook) there's just not as much source material anymore. Stewart knew to get out when the going was still good.
