Well considering what his namesake, WB DuBois had in mind as the ideal for black society to become, it makes sense. Tom is more successful than his peers and even most of America in general, but no one loves him for it. His name is a label for being an Uncle Tom, but that's really not what he is, he adheres to a rigid discipline, has professional self control, and ambition, but he's lost his entire culture because of it. He mixes with his slutty, coal burning wife who uses his insecurities against him, and their mulatto daughter is raised in the suburbs and is bereft of identity. The show shits on Tom a lot, but it also sort of paints him as a tragic figure who has broken free of the toxic elements of his culture, but in exchange has forfeited all that made him black. Huey was supposed to be the counter example to Tom, a motivated new generation that has aspirations while keeping national identity and cultural autonomy alive. He tries to be successful, respectable, and black, and we don't know if he'll be successful or not.
We could solve this race thing in America by creating new states adhering to demographic geographical divides, but, we'll probably have to completely fall apart before it can happen.
