It was a monumental fuck-up: militarily, politically; it put strains on his supply lines... if Hitler wanted oil so badly, why could he not have opened dialogue with Stalin? I mean, those channels must surely have existed -- they could have worked out trade, surely? These are two governments that had earlier worked out a non-aggression agreement. In the interests of that, I am sure Stalin would have at least been open to the idea of trading oil for German commodities, if not for money (he was a Communist after all).
