I've seen Mexican flag decals and stuff on trucks but never a flag. Never see any mexican flags on lawns either. Only Flag I see on the regular is the Texas flag.
Part of it is that the Mexicans in each state are from different parts of Mexico. Most of the ones in Texas are from Northern Mexico like Durango and Chihuahua. They have more European blood, and generally have been in the states longer than most Mexicans.
The ones in California are from further south, have more Indian blood and have generally only been in America since the 1940s at the earliest.
That and California is kind of a pit where everyone thinks their shit don't stink no matter what race they are.

Houstonian here so I might as well contribute to this thread. My best friend is mexican. He was born here and his parents are both citizens and pay their taxes.
They are a people that consider family hugely important, to the point of having family gatherings every single weekend. They're good, god-fearing people for the most part. The illegal ones usually work for what I like to call the "lead-mexican" who speaks english and is usually a tax-paying citizen. He corrals the illegals and probably pays them jack shit. The black people in Houston are 10x worse than the mexicans.
Never had a problem with any mexican living in Houston.

Honestly, having spent a great deal of time in sacramento and modesto, then in san antonio (Rudys is best), this is somewhat true. Now you can pretty easily find huge numbers of your gangster types in texas, but most texan mexicans have a sense of pride in themselves.
You see a lot of white mexicans that will confuse the shit out of you because they are white as fuck and start speaking in spanish, but because they are so white they consider themselves as better than their darker brethren. The whole atmosphere is different; they dress in shiny bright clothes and have a sense of style - cowboy hats and boots are a staple. They are also very masculine, but you can still see them holding their gf/wives purse.
Like another anon said though, Texas sees the culture as part of it's own, california doesn't have that.
