I know that feel. Joined when I was 25 so quite a bit older than most although there were plenty other mid-20s guys and even a few lunatics in 30s going through training with me. If you're thinking of joining make sure you do your research and be wary of what they tell you in the recruiting offices - there's plenty of honest guys there but far too many who will flat out lie to get you to join and particularly to join in roles they want to see filled regardless of whether they suit you. The unofficial boards for Army and Navy are ARRSE and RumRation respectively - google them and you'll be able to get the truth unvarnished from people who are either ex or current military.
Personally (being ex-Army) I'd recommend going Royal Navy - in my experience they're a cut above in terms of the quality of their guys. Also they actually have proper jobs to do day to day (warships don't run themselves regardless of whether it's peacetime or war) whereas Army life is a total waste of time unless you're either on tour or just about to go on tour. The RAF have an easy life but don't expect anyone to take you seriously if you join them.
It all comes down to what you want from the military if you were to join. If you want to really test yourself 'as a man' and all that (and nothing wrong with that) you should avoid ANY job that allows females to join. Seriously, they drag standards down and are a fucking nightmare to live and work with. So in that case I'd recommend Army Combat Arms (Infantry, Cavalry etc) or Royal Marines. Don't even think about RAF Regiment - they're a fucking joke throughout the military.
If you're of a more intellectual bent go Intelligence Corps. Army Air Corps and Royal Engineers or REME solid options too. Absolutely avoid the RAMC (Med Corps) - which is what I was.

Appalling organisation, shit tier officers (seriously, we only get the dregs from Sandhurst) and you hardly ever actually do your job (Medic). WIth Med Corps your first posting won't be to a proper regiment (i.e. an infantry, artillery or cavalry regiment) but to a 'Medical Regiment' where your day to day life will involve standing around pointlessly and occasionally doing stock checks on the same kit you've checked thousands of times already that week. To be fair most Army jobs are just as pointless in peacetime but at least if you go Combat Arms you'll be at a proper regiment and in a job that has some prestige. If you go Medic you'll be lucky to do the job you signed up for at all in the first few years and will simply be waiting until you get promoted and (maybe) then get posted to a proper non-Medical regiment.

Solid choice and yes they do - far better. Other elite option is obviously the Paras. You really do need excellent fitness to pass initial selection to train for either.

Don't be. 23 will have you older than most recruits but not by much - you won't stick out and certainly won't be the oldest guy in your group.
