When you are working to put yourself through school minimum wage doesn't cut it. I rely on my tips for books gas money and etc. Usually the tips are enough to get me a little above $10 an hour after fuel expenses. Driving out to a no-tippers house is like showing up to work at a commission job and not making any sales. I was a delivery helper for liquor as a summer job my first two years in uni and sometimes they sent us to the ghetto. this was chicago by the way. sometimes people would talk shit to me and try to intimidate me but it wasn't all that bad. only a few drivers have ever been held up so i wasn't too worried about it. they always sent me witha black driver so they were able to diffuse tension. i will say, almost every black driver i worked with was kinda lazy and made me do most of the work, whereas every other employee was super fair and if there was a stop with a small drop off that would only need one guy, they'd tell me to sit in the car. only one black dude i worked with didn't take advantage of me and offered to buy my lunch.
also, i've worked delivery for a pizza place in the past and rarely any black people tip.
That said, I don't mind blacks all that much. There are good and bad of all races. Good and bad people. It's more of a societal thing. Plenty of blacks who are raised in white areas and have some privilege/guidance are great. Plenty of whites who have every opportunity in the world end up pieces of shit.
