More of a slow decline as people stopped giving a shit about military service meaning that Rome had to look to mass recruitment of brainless German savages to make up for the fact that Romans no longer wanted to fight for Rome. In the long run though I blame Caesar for naming himself dictator for life and leading to the rise of Augustus. Sure other tyrants like Sulla existed but they didn't have appointed successors with the same degree of influence that Octavian had.

Alaric I, the first king of the Visigoths was even a commander in the roman army, before leading the Visigoths against Rome.
Another interesting figure was Genseric, who formed the Vandal kingdom in northern africa. They were kicked out Europe by the visigoths, and ended up sailing to africa after building a fleet. They made there way through the roman controlled cities conquering them and eventually taking over Carthage. The romans at the time were to busy with another war to care, and they ended up conquering a chunk of the Mediterranean and holding the Roman empire hostage for awhile with control of the sea.

Rome lost large amounts of its population to disease among other shit and suffered large crop failures because of the population loss and decreasing temperatures. incidentally, the empire collected its taxes via crop yields, so when the crops started failing, they just forced subsistence farmers to give them their crops. as you could imagine, this takes a lot of manpower and costs a lot too, so they hired germanic mercenaries so they could pay for the empire, including the germanic mercenaries, which wound up getting farmers killed which meant that they had to hire more Germanic mercenaries to collect the taxes.
and this was only one of the many number of problems facing the late roman empire.
