Due to the nature of obtaining cow's milk it can involve a lot of pathogens humans do no want to consume, sometimes including feces getting into the production line. So the milk is pasteurized to kill off any bacteria which may linger in the milk ensuring something that could kill you now has absolutely no possible way to kill you via simple consumption.

I had raw milk a couple times when I lived in Northern Idaho. It was quite a bit better tasting than any other type of milk I have had. Very rich you can't drink a lot of it in one sitting.
Never got sick or anything like that but after the novelty of doing something that's not allowed in my home state wore off, I did not continue buying it because I don't drink milk much at all normally.

For one thing every adult drinks tea 3-4 times a day. If you have a guest over, you offer them tea. And all that tea is with milk. One time I was distributing my cousin's wedding cards and I had to drink about 12 cups of tea that day. Half of them are lactose intolerant and don't even know it.
Also kids drink about 2-3 glasses of milk a day. Hell I'm 19 and I still drink two glasses of milk with Horlicks every day. Hope that explains.
