Ask a goy who just started a community college class at the age 26 anything.

School to eventually become a Registered Nurse at a pediatric clinic. May get Bachelor's for Neonata (infant)l nursing in a hospital
>>
Drop out.

No one is going to hire you at the age of 30+ with your lack of working experience. How would they know that you will actually show up on time and do a good job? There is zero proof that you are professional and dependable.

Learn some skills and get a job in a factory driving a forklift or become a truck driver.

Grow up you faggot moron. YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT IN THE MEDICAL FIELD. I FUCKING GUARANTEE IT.

That's perfectly normal......You just want to be labeled as a special snowflake. People start their college education at different times, age doesnt really matter.

Why would anyone here give a shit that some bum is going to community college at an age where most people have been out of school for 3 years and what the fuck does it have to do with pol?

What did you waste 8 years of your life doing?
>Being 30 years and just getting your bachelors degree
By your 30s you should already be well established in your career and making upwards of six figures
>>
>>78060631

If you're a male, you're likely never going to get into pediatrics or nursing.
It's absolutely career suicide/waste of money and the only way you'll get into that division of healthcare is to become an MD.
No one is going to a hire a man for pediatrics or nursing. No parents trust a man with kids unless you're a doctor. Doctor's offices won't trust you either.
There's a metric fuckton of Staceys and Jessicas who become nurses and do fucking nursing, pre-natal care, pediatrics, and all the girly shit. For every male that applies to one of these industries, there are tens of thousands of women.
You miiiiiight be able to get in as a diversity hire but chances are very slim.

If you're a man & interested in healthcare, you need to pony up and get your ass in the money making businesses of Cardiology, Oncology, or Radiology.
These industries make billions & billions a year and are always in demand for people.

If you're a femanon, then disregard anything written above, the door is wide open for your career.

"Let's see, we got this 22 year old dual-major who recently graduated. Impeccable grades. Nice work history. I think we should hire her."

"Wait a minute, check out this fuckin' 31 year old man over here with a huge gap in his employment history. I have a feeling about this guy. Let's hire him instead."

Dawg it's not impossible, but it's pretty damn close. You would be a diversity hire, not because they want to bring you on. >>78065621

We communicate with doctor's offices, hospitals, billing offices, etc.
They are all loaded with women. All of it. I've never ever talked to a man from a pediatrics office. Not once.

In the USA no one trusts grown men around kids because of all the murder porn on TV these days. They're all conditioned to think that men are child molesters at every turn.
There is one plus-side about working in pediatrics as a dude. TONS of hot chicks work in that industry.

I did the factory thing for 14 years after high school. I wanted to kill myself every day. I took night classes and eventually got a bachelors then a master's degree. Did so well I got a scholarship to get a phd. Now I teach in my field. Much easier and more fun job than driving a forklift. Best decision I ever made. Sure I was 36 when my cohort was 26,27 but it didn't cause any problems.
>>
>>78066848

I agree with you. The only time I ever see male nurses is in ER, OR, or PT.

a friend of the family finished his medical education at the age of 38/39 but he couldn't get into any residency programs because of the age limit. so he didn't get his degree. I would learn more about residency programs in the usa and see if this could happen to you before doing anything

OP I was in and out of college and finally at the age of 29 graduated with a BA in comp sci. I'm 33 now and make 6 figures. Granted it's a different field and all that but I never got the feeling of taboo from others about my age. Sure doing this used to be "weird" but I feel society has shifted in so many different ways you can't look at social norms like this as you did in the past. So it's good that you are trying it might not work out but you are trying that's what matters.
>>
>>78061054

Can anyone confirm how bad this actually is? I'm the same age as OP and going back to university in September.

I did a shit first degree. I'm starting a conversion masters degree in computer science, I've been learning to code since December and have 3 apps on the android play store already. In a year when I graduate I should be really good at it.

But is it as this guy says? Am I already fucked? Am I wasting my time?

Female nursing student here

Every male nursing student in my classes are ugly af, but girls flock to them nonstop. My female nursing professors look over the girls and directly ask the boys for their opinions every time. Some have even flirted with them and told them how great of a choice they have in choosing this profession as nursing in general needs more male nurses AND how those male nurses get promoted to higher positions. Male nurses beat the females at their own thing, I don't know what you're talking about.

Weird how male nurses get so much shit. Honestly, I feel that most people here have no conception of how things actually work in the real world.

I was an EMT for years, kinda screwed around in college and ended up with a bullshit, just-for-completion, liberal arts bachelors.

I could choose between spending a year getting paramedic to make maybe 40k for the rest of my life with no advancement, or get a BSN in 16 months to make 60k+, with the option to later on, make six figures and open my own practice as a nurse practitioner.

Some of you aren't in the US, so you wouldn't know, but the consistently rated best jobs are Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. They get great pay, and can diagnose and write scripts; this is all without spending over a dozen years in school.

In all of nursing 9% of nurses are male, that is true. However, nearly half of advanced practice nurses and admins (the ones making six figures) are male. You also need to realize that there are things like flight nurses etc. that trend heavily towards men.

$107,000 a year salary with just a Bachelors. Working with babies lol. I'll take it

but honestly my girlfriend and hopefully wife to be will have a good job, so hopefully I won't even need to get a Bachlors and just stick with working at a pediatric clinic to have a good combined household income

I have a question: is it a good idea to transfer from a community college?
>>
>>78089680

Dang... your wife's son will definitely have everything he needs for a bright future.
>>
>>78089680

Yeah, Nurse Practitioners make very good pay, though NP programs are Master's programs. Often times the requirements for NP programs include having at least a few years of RN (BSN) experience in the field that you want to go into. ICU/ED for Acute Care, General for Family/Primary, Psych for Psych.

Still, 4 years bachelors + 2 masters isn't bad. That said, now is the time to go in, since they want Nurse Practitioner to be Doctoral entry by 2025. Though, Dr. title is does seem sexy.

On the practical side, having a lot of experience is a good thing, as the clinical hour requirements for NP programs are lower than PA because you are supposed to come in with experience.
>>
>>78091223

There is nothing wrong with getting an ASN, RN at a community college. Now, whether or not you want to transfer matters a lot with what you want to do with your degree.

If you have an Associate's, often times you are going to be relatively stuck working in long-term care facilities or offices. A lot of the modern nursing and hospital regulations are pushing towards BSN minimum for staffing hospitals. Obviously, you could get a job at an institution, but it would be less likely.

The best bet is to do your RN to BSN at a good school, that way you always have advancement open going forward. That said, ASN vs. BSN pay is virtually the same, so that might count for a lot depending on how much debt you want to go into.

I looked into being an NP, then a PA.. Now I'm considering Occupational Therapy (Im getting my kinesiology BS degree next semester).

I'm 25. I want to start my career. NP seemed to be a career for those who are already nurses, and PA seemed to be a career for those who have been an EMT or other random hospital staff. If I was going to try for PA school, I'd need to work in a hospital for a year or more. I'd rather just go to med school with that time.

I started out wanting to do Prosthetics and Orthotics but the money there is running dry.

Now I'm looking toward OT because it's still rehabilitative science and it's possible to reach above 100k in geriatrics.

Any OTs here?
>>
>>78092072

OT seems like pretty well paying field. I've known one girl that was doing OT school, and she did quite well for herself. I'm not sure how well males do for hiring and such in OT, since it is also 10% male like nursing.

I worked full time as a Tech (CNA) so the hospital paid for my school. Total debt $0. My employer only paid $5k a year towards school. Community college is cheap. Right now I'm working on my RN to BSN online. Going slow, but I have no debt.
>>
>>78094886
Ever hear of any examples of an RN working at a pediatric clinic? That's my aspiration - being an RN while avoiding potential traumatic/depressing/nauseating situations, so I chose a pediatric clinic (the place kids go to when they have the flu, etc). I called all my surrounding ones and they told me they hire 'em, though I wonder if the salary is any different working in that private clinic as opposed to working in a traditional hospital environment
>>
>>78094156

Yes, doing CC first is extremely smart, especially if you have an Associate's coming out of it.

That said, majoring in languages is not so great from a financial standpoint.

It also might be difficult, as community colleges generally might not be as equipped for language coursework. If you have to take German 1-5 in a sequence, for instance, you could end up rather boned

>>78094886

I'm paying shit forward too. Fuck being in debt. I have enough saved to pay for my 2nd degree RN outright. Christ, paying off college the first time was such a fucking nightmare.

>>78095150

Most offices are only going to staff one or two RNs, even group practices. There isn't really as much of a role for professional nurses (RNs) in a primary/specialist care settings, as opposed to LPNs and Medical Assistants.

Also, if you are a male, you are likely never going to get hired in peds, OB/GYN, etc. It doesn't matter how many background checks you pass or letter of recommendations you have. The current environment is simply one where no one is going to take that risk, even if it all bullshit. Reality sucks, but it is reality.
>>
>>78095150
The only real area where male RN's seem to be lacking is OB and I'm not sure why. Whether it is men don't want to work there, employers are afraid patients will be uncomfortable, etc. Not sure of the pay. Hospitals tend to pay about the same, some offer sign on bonuses. Clinics usually don't do bonuses as far as I know. There was a clinic nearby that a lot of my co-workers used to work at that paid ridiculously well. A lot of quit out of boredom. My best advice is to go to school with an open mind. Don't go into Nursing for the money. You make much more as a bartender and the hours are better. Hate to tell you, but no matter where you go, you will experience traumatic, depressing, and nauseating situations.

What's the big deal? Grown ups re-train and prepare for new careers all the time. That's all you're doing. The medical field is also pretty exclusive in terms of industry. You don't need previous experience for that, you simply need credentials. They're going to start you at the bottom like everyone else in every other field.

Good for you in taking control of your life.
>>
>>78095953

I do have to second this.

>Hate to tell you, but no matter where you go, you will experience traumatic, depressing, and nauseating situations.

So for :
>>78095150

DO NOT, EVER, EVER, EVER go into the medical field is you are unequipped to deal with human tragedy.

You might think something like a peds clinic will be fine, up until you see that a kid's labs came back with massive cell counts, and the creeping realization that little Timmy isn't going to see his next birthday.

You will deal with that shit, and it will eat away at your humanity. I remember watching a father beating his hands bloody on driveway pavement, as we coded his 4-year old daughter that fell in the family pool. "It was only a couple minutes," "I was only a couple minutes," screamed over and over and over. That story didn't have a happy ending.

You will have good kids, that you might see for years, and they will die or get diseases. Some you might find in the obituary, or hear through the medical grapevine that so-and-so who you treated as a child OD'd on drugs. This shit will happen, and you best be prepared for it.

No amount of academic knowledge can prepare you for the real world medical field, and you can never truly isolate yourself from the bad things that happen.

This isn't meant to be "Hurr, I'm tough," or any shit like that, but a warning. You be damn sure you know what you are getting into before you make that choice. There are more than a few people who spent years training only to burn out and hang up the scope after a year or two.
>>
>>78097454
This, I had to drop out of the medical field for this reason. I consider myself pretty apathetic and numb a lot but nothing could have prepared me for reality coming in hotter than an 18 wheeler at 200 mph.

The thing more scary than watching people die, is watching people die, and not feeling anything.

I remember a man had a massive MI at his kitchen table, before stumbling out into his yard before collapsing. We were working him, and actually defibbed him back into a pulsed rhythm for a bit. Though, he kept going back into V-fib, until one shock sent him into asystole, RIP.

The family was huddled around us all, just sobbing and crying. I actually caught myself being reflexively annoyed that they were causing such a commotion. That was probably the moment that I realized that I had "changed," and not in a good way. Patients weren't people anymore, and while you still do your best to save everyone and provide the best possible care, they might as well be mannequins.

So yeah, don't go into medicine, it's full of broken of people, or people who will become broken people.

Hello, for several years I worked in an administrative capacity at UPMC (Presby), the largest hospital system in Pennsylvania. You've made a smart choice, but you're going to have to realize that your age puts you at a disadvantage. The worst thing you can do now is drop out. Hospital administrators can read the writing on the wall, we're headed for a demographic crisis in the United States, and while the market for nursing positions is competitive, getting your BSN and specializing along with being open to moving and working tough shifts for a few years will open a whole new world of successes to you.

Don't pay attention to these idiots, I'm an MD, and we need more nurses, as much as we can get. Specially for ER & ICU. If I could give you a piece of advice is look for hospitals in the south, they're paying above national average and opportunities to advance are great. >>
>>78103448
She did the same thing bro. Not trying to be a jerk but poli sci is a trap of a major and really doesn't give the kind of opportunities you are lead to believe. And once you get the degree you get pushed into shit like public administration. Start looking at HR or management roles, Best Buy is actually a good place with great benefits and discounts. While you're doing that try and get involved with the community (scout leader, community organizer, volunteering) in your spare time. After a few years of that either get a doctorate, go to law school, or run for public office. It's what my sister has planned and it's pretty sound imo. I have a b.s. in physics and only just got a job with it after being out of school for a year. The job market is hell.

Gyn Onc and I love my specialty because I get to operate 3 days a week and 2 office days, REAL emergencies are rare (obviously all the typical post surgical you'll get in any surgical sub) I start my day at 5am not married so I go exercise, get a good breakfast and I'm at the hospital by 6-630 depending on the day, once a week we round with the gyn and gyn-onc residents which is always awesome because they get all the scut work done by the time I'm there.
If it's a surgical day, depending on what I'm doing I like to start at 7am and usually end around 7-8pm, on call once a month and rarely get something that the gyn or resident on call can't handle

Anything ICU is a good lifestyle in the sense that your hours are always the same, but a bad lifestyle in the sense that you see a lot of death and depressing situations.
ER nurses are good also, fixed hours, good if you like the stressing situations
Personally not a fan of IM, so can't tell you much there.
My nurses are awesome, I usually deal with Philipino, Latin and the Odd american nurse and they're all awesome. I usually try to have the same team when I go into surgery that means I'll always have my surgeries with one on my partners+my OR nurse
So my best piece of advice, find some surgeon, become their best friend and we'll take care of you if you take care of my patients
>>
>>78103722
>was incredibly high
Fixed that for you. The demand WAS high about 4 years ago, then everyone went to nursing school because they heard "ZOMG THE NURSING FIELD IS BOOMIMG!!!!!!" Then by the time they graduated all the jobs were taken by those that were graduating while the newbies were in school. It's caused the nursing field to become as competitive as engineering. The same thing is happening with teachers, a large portion of the field is retiring at the same time in the next 2-4 years, and in 4 years after that you'll see people graduating with teaching degrees not being able to find work.

>>

Non profits are indeed shit, but to really get into actual administration you'll need to slug through it. I wish you luck, but don't let optimism about graduating slow down your job search, the earlier you start the easier it will be. I wish I would have spent more time on it rather than coasting through my last semester.
>>
>>78103431
Also, having a nurse I can trust and know will always have my back is worth a million bucks, to tell you the truth the reason I sleep at night after a surgical day is not because of the residents or fellows but because I have 3 nurses I trust 100% and one of them is always on call or with me in the OR, 2 are men, 1 is an old lady.
If you go into something surgical, you have to become one of these nurses, you have to be the surgeons eyes and hands literally, this will guarantee your position in the hospital. The hospital will always listen to a surgeon when it comes to surgical nurses.

Let it be known that you may always recreate yourself in this great country where each citizen is given the privilege to choose virtually any career path imaginable.

Right now, Community Colleges are the true saviors of education for any age.

I personally think every kid should just ignore the SATs and head straight to a CC.

Not only is this a more economical route. CC's tend to be "commuter schools"--meaning most of the student body lives off campus, which eliminates the popular college culture of frat parties, and a general liberal indoctrination on campus.

Another perk is that transfer students are favored over recent HS grads due to their familiarity with college coursework and performance.

With CCs you get: No distractions, less debt, and better education in the long run.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO reason to go straight to a 4 year nowadays. ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE UNSURE OF YOUR FUCKING MAJOR

Sure the average age of the uni/college crowd in 80% 19-24 but there are alot of mature students.

People don't give a shit about a lack of work experience in the field as long as your a recent grad. Also young people are fucking autistic and don't know how to talk without mumbling the shit out of everything. It's like they don't even know how to use words to communicate or something.

Like holy fuck, people under 25 are worthless.

You probably could but you would most likely need to have some anatomy and physiology credits, mabye some psychology credits.

Also one big question is: Can you handle working with old people? The 50-70 year old crowd is your chief demographic in healthcare.

I just got into a nursing program and before that I was an EMT for a while. Found three things that help with coping:

>Know everything you can do and be the best you can be at it.

Arguably your number one defense. You can justify to yourself why you failed to save someone if you convince yourself you did everything you could possibly do and you can objectively prove that to yourself. E.g., "I did what I could given the situation now that I looked back. Maybe if her parents bothered to take a CPR class and knew how to properly buy her some time until we got there then she could have survived."

>Black sense of humor.

Number one reason for comedy is to deal with tragedies (hence why most comics are depressed as fuck). I found the people with no-sense of humor tend to not survive very long in EMS.

>Be professional and don't get attached more than you need to be.

Difficult at first when you're a rookie, but eventually you learn to keep your humanity down enough to not get attached to someone that went code on you.

All said and done, I gotta admit one will slip through your defenses eventually - its inevitable. But hey, better to grieve over one than too many.

So tough they high-tailed it outta here in 2014, after sitting on bases doing jack shit in Kabul. It must be nice riding off the blood, sweat, and cold hard cash of another nation. I like Canada, but don't put yourself out there as some elite fighting force, because your not. The only guys you had in ISAF worth shaking a stick at were the Canadian Grenadier Guards.

That was probably the moment that I realized that I had "changed," and not in a good way. Patients weren't people anymore, and while you still do your best to save everyone and provide the best possible care, they might as well be mannequins.

Hate catching myself having that feeling.

PRO TIP IF YOU'RE A MAN TRAINING FOR NURSING

You aren't being hired as a Nurse. You're being hired as de-facto Security. Male nurses are expected to deal with all the violent cunts that come in drunk, drugged or otherwise fucked up. It is VASTLY more important that you be physically strong and know how to handle yourself in a fight than it is for you to know shit about medicine as a male nurse.
When some dickhead off his face on meth and trying to tear his own skin off, that's your job. Don't expect the women to do it, this is why you were hired. When you've got to hoist some 400kg landwhale onto a Gurney, that's you too. Don't expect any help from the girls.

Male nurses are just security guards who can get fired for doing their job.

Not really, hospitals always have a dedicated security detail and alot of the time there happens to be an officer or two in the hospital.

Although as a male nurse you would be lifting heavier patients more than the girls.

Have had 2 sisters, a sister in law, and a few relatives all nurses at various times.

Trust me when I say this you'll be used as a work horse by the female nurses.

Lol, its like babysitting children, honestly. They get cranky during Ramadan and feel like they need to kill/rape/molest more people than they normally. A few spikes in suicide bombings.

Think of it this way- Imagine you traveled back to like 600 AD, and everything was the same but EVERYONE you met back then had access to fully automatic weapons, explosives, TOW missiles, and anti-aircraft manpads/guns. Like giving cavemen a bunch of ordnance.

And that is the most accurate description of Afghanistan I can give you.

Both girls and guys are treated as slaves by the nurses. People trying to ruin careers isn't as common as you think.

My experiences with female nurses in a professional environment have be pretty good. Women by default are alot nicer to guys than other girls.

> No one is going to hire you at the age of 30+ with your lack of working experience.

Once you join the medical field, the jobs become plentiful. The medical field is lacking so many due to the lack of so many NOT willing to work in these fields. Likely due to narcissism, they are too selfish and dysfunctional. It's a field where you have to care and do your job correctly.

Any field where work and manpower is actually needed is a good choice for your main path in college.

The problem is people are often picking college courses which are related to jobs in the world that are not only over populated but highly competitive.

For instance lawyers. Unless you plan to become a person who eats and sleeps in this field of study, just fuckin forget becoming a lawyer. It's not a job for the lazy and partial interested.

There's no such thing as skill with day trading. The amount of volatility is too high and you're essentially gambling. Ask any seasoned investor and they will tell you the same.
>>
>>78120780

>>78120986

CNA is worthless for going into nursing. It is 40 hours or so of cleaning up after patients, making beds, and bathing them. Yes, nurses have to learn that too, but they actually have the whole medical portion as well. A lot of places train CNAs for no money because they get free workers in the ever revolving door of people who will clean up shit.

Also, you aren't licensed as a CNA. Only nurses carry licenses.

Salt Lake Community College is insane with its exhausting list of diversity requirement catalog listing to choose from, all insanely anti-conservative and anti-white.
