It's obviously to pull rank; sure it can take half a brain to look at the past, look around you and apply common sense to reach the point, but people will dismiss someone in arguments quickly if their metaphorical penis doesn't measure up.
Saying "I'm a globetrotting university professor, and from my extensive travels I've deduced socialism doesn't work." carries more gout than a regular discerning man just saying socialism doesn't work.
