Think about it for probably 6 weeks. Get in amazing shape before. Not necessarily gym shape, but as in physically fit for the things you will be doing, i.e. rucking, running, strict form pull ups, and lots of calisthenics. Lifting weights will help with the obstacle course. There are some good French documentaries on it. I'd probably reccommend doing Stew Smith's USMC MARSOC RECON fitness book as it is the closest thing you will be doing.

I'm not expecting to be handed an officers job right when I enlist. I was thinking, maybe after a few years of being right at the bottom, they'll see that I know a few languages and put me in a role that suits what I learned.

There are very few guys there from NATO militaries. In the 80s the REP was full of Brits, that's no longer the case. Lot of Slavs, South and Central Americans, poor French. You don't need military experience and you don't need French.

Come to think of it, the only time I remember really seeing a British platoon was after one of their buddies caught some shrapnel to the leg and was treated in our infirmary. All trolling aside, I'm seriously considering this. I did 4 years as grunt in the USMC including 2 deployment(16 months) to the frontlines of helmand province. In the 3 years since I've been out I've been bored as hell and nothing interests me about civilian life. My inactive reserve time ends in January so I have some time to get back into decent shape. I can still run 3 miles in 21-22 minutes and do 10 pull-ups.

I did a 6-month contract in Iraq in 2004 with Bw/Xe. They always paid late, their line soldier was a meth/energy drink/roid addict and they paid me only when I finished 6 months and left. You need to be a "legal permanent resident" in order to join the military for expedited citizenship, and youre not going to get lpr in the US unless youre either highly educated, or a bottom of the barrel piece of 3rd world trash (thanks obama) the only other, occasionally open possibility is to join as an 09L, interpreter/translator, but you need to test out as fluent in a language they need, which is currently dari, farsi, pashtun, etc.

You need to be in great shape to even be considered for the French foreign legion. If you can't do 10 pull ups on arrival they will send you away instantly, you will be up against healthy and desperate men who have no other options and ex-military from other countries.
If you are not in peak physical condition don't bother going as it will damage your future chances, stay in the uk get yourself in shap and then review your options after that, it's probably better to try to join the UK's forces.

Nah. 4 during the entry is minimum, 8 optimum. Full pullups with a wide open grip. During the first two weeks of selection again, 4 is minimum, 8 is optimum. To stand a chance you should finally do that 10 britguy is mentioning, however 8 is pretty much enough. I got in with 8, there were guys who got in with 5 or 6 even.
FFL generally does not care too much about your entrance level fitness, since the Legion will train you during the basic and regimental training. What do you tell them, your motivation and everything in your head and heart counts much much more.

You'll clean your barracks, outside the barracks, the parking lot of the barracks, paint the decorative rocks around the barracks, sweep sand, mop rain, rake rocks and so on.
Peace time infantry makes you basically a janitor who every now and then gets to shoot a rifle and sleep in a tent.

OP could always join the AFL (Aborigine Foreign Legion). I hear that if you can find their recruiting station out in the heartland-aussie bush on your own, you're pretty much guaranteed accepted.
Similar to the FFL, you'll need to be able to speak Abbo. Also heard that part of their initial training process is learning how to use a boomerang effectively, and that if you don't master it in two weeks you have a good chance of being kicked out.
It's a hard life, but the pay is shit and the honors you receive will not be recognized anywhere else in the world. That's what makes it all the more special I suppose.
