In most non-fucked states, you can walk right into a gun store (for example some Wal-Marts) and purchase a rifle or handgun.
All you need to do is pass a background check if you're purchasing it from a dealer in most states.

Here in Kentucky it takes all of an hour to get one, and they carry them in Walmart, Dicks, and pawn shops in addition to dedicated gun shops.
Tennessee makes it even easier: you can buy one without any paperwork necesary.

I can tell you for me, in Cali, getting a gun is extremely easy, and we're considered one of the less gun friendly states. I have 3 gun shops within like 5 miles of my house.
They're stocked up with assault rifles, hand guns, bolt actions, shotguns, etc...
All I have to do is take some stupid easy test that costs $25 and wait 10 days to pick it up.
Other than that, and magazine restrictions (easy to get around), I can pretty much get anything I want that isn't full-auto.

Arizona's the best. You can buy a gun in half an hour, just be sure you aren't wanted by the FBI. When I was buying my freedom stick, the girl running my background check told me a guy came in get a gun, and within 10 minutes was surrounded by and apprehended by the FBI. The agent said, "You know why we're here for you, right?" The guy trying to get a gun just said "fuck, yeah I do..." and was taken away.
