I think it's worth noting what effects video games, particularly the FPS military games, have had on gun ownership.
Go look at a collection thread on /k/. Younger Americans collections are far more paramilitaristic then the collections of my generation (in my 40's). Now, almost everyone I know who likes guns has an AR, but it was their 18th gun, not their 1st or 2nd.
To be clear, I don't have a problem with it, but when I was growing up, most gun nuts would get a handgun, then maybe a bolt action rifle or shotgun, and the collection would grow to include a 30-30 lever action, maybe a cowboy style gun, and all sorts of guns from different era's and hobbies. I knew a few people with mini-14's, and maybe one or two with AR's.
Now, collections are like 4 AR's, a SCAR, 2 AK's, 2 Glocks, a shield, and maybe some old 22 that was found in grandpa's closet. I can only guess COD or Battlefield have been a big influence.
Also, younger shooters are much more interested in suppressors, and short barreled shotguns and rifles that require additional Gov't approval (tax stamp for $200 and some info). Most of the older American I know are not as interested, or they have been through many more gun purchases before they considered a suppressor.
Again, just an observation, not a criticism.
