I used to PVP a bit in DS1, and I would constantly run into guys playing female characters, and they would be fully decked out in armor so that you couldn't even tell by looking that they were female.
So why did they do it? Why play a female character, and then cover her in armor? The ass excuse doesn't work in that case.

I play make males in most RPGs because they are more often the default. Shepard in Mass Effect, male Nord in sky rim, make in Knights of the Old Republic, etc etc. They are more often war games and the male characters are more convincingly developed because the female choice is often gender fantasy. However there are RPGs where the female makes more sense, like in Final Fantasy XIII (shit game), Kotor 2 (game was dev'd around female option more), and there are a few others. I think even ME andromeda is being based around female being the standard.
I don't like it when gender fantasy and this false altruistic sense of gender balance get shoved into AAA games, but some games make sense as the female because of the design. Most however, make more sense to be male. I often default to male regardless because the decision trees are easier to empathize with, but that's really it.

Anyway, characters in videogames had their features exaggerated so males look super muscular and females super hot. This allows males to build their dream woman and give her "life" since they will hardly identify with the unrealistic male design. That's my guess anyway. Just depends on the game. Dragon age felt correct to play a guy, mass effect a chick. Just depends on what seems right for the setting or what kind of visual aesthetic I think fits best, no real agenda behind my choices in the same way I do tabletop games.
