This. I've self-diagnosed myself before doctors time and time again. Even for other people.

Is it true in America that when you go to the doctors, they try as hard as possible to get you out the door again?

They don't actually care about you, not even pretend to, is what I've heard.

Why don't you love capitalism, m8?

On a serious note, the German healthcare system has its problems, but shit like what you describe just doesn't happen. And if it does, then you do not get a bill with 4 digits, but you get not a bill at all or you go see a different doctor.

I work closely with a few docs, I feel like most doctors are bullshitting 99% of the time. Most of the time you get better by yourself, if you it's serious the ER will take care of you.

This is accurate. Meanwhile, I vacationed in Europe, got sick, and all the hospital staff were super friendly. I was even chumming it up with nurses, clerks, and doctors. It was totally unlike American hospitals. I had insurance which paid, but the total bill was only a couple hundred bucks.

Ok it's bad, but no like this. No doctor is going to charge you 4 digits for a simple visit like that. Unless OP means $00.00 instead of what most normal people call 4 digits $0000. You are full of shit OP, and if you don't have insurance and don't know to let them know upfront and ask for a minimal visit as soon as you get there then you are a fucking moron and a liar. Most offices won't let you visit without insure unless you pay a good portion of the bill, usually 50%. So you would have known what you owed before you got a bill in the mail. Unless you're lying and went to the ER. It should never be more than 75-100 bucks for a short visit like you suggest.
>>
>>77828664
No, the internet has great uses, and I'm glad have doctors have access to it so they're just not trying to remember shit from med school. I just shouldn't have to go to a doctor to get a prescription for basic shit. I'm not a retard, and know how to do a basic Google search.

FYI, lodge a complaint against him. I work in Patient Care Services at a hospital, mostly monitoring physician and nurse behavior and analyzing patient complaints. If any patient said their doctor looked up their symptoms on wikipedia, we'd put that doctor in front of a Medical Peer Review and grill him, then reprimand him.

Awwww, you gonna cry?

The wait for surgery can be years long. There's a reason private clinics are popping up everywhere. Hell, my medical insurance will even pay for me to go to the states for treatment. I can go to a private clinic and get an MRI in the same day (covered by insurance). You go the public route and you'll be waiting for weeks or months. Doctors up here aren't payed shit, so keeping the good ones is a losing battle.

New doctors tend to care more. Then over the years after unrepentant fatties and drug addicts stomp on their soul, they become cold and uncaring.

There's also a lot of hacks that just dole out medicine willy nilly. I've told a psychiatrist before that I had a meth problem and she prescribed me fucking vyvanse. Told an addiction specialist that I got sent to rehab for benzos, and he prescribed me kpins and temazepam. Not that I complained at the time, but it just goes to show the lunacy in American medical care.

Informed response from somebody with ties to said industry

Medical costs skyrocket in US due to terrible policy:

1. Most Americans use Medicare of Medicaid (~45%) and as with most government services, it's almost impossible to maintain costs which is why CMS has instituted bundled payments. Bundled payments can seriously impact the financial performance of hospitals which is why they're all moving towards ACOs and smaller hospitals are getting eaten up by larger ones.

2. No Tort Reform - this is way more important than liberals try to overlook. Lack of Tort Reform encourages doctors to test as much as possible to protect themselves from lawsuits. This compounds prices as they will almost always request the latest, greatest tests which increases demand and prices. Almost every physician I've spoken with agree on this, especially those employed in private health care systems. Lack of Tort Reform + Bundled Payments is going to negatively impact physicians in the future.

3. Health Exchanges too Expensive - it's not surprising the United Health Group (one of the largest Payors in the US) are pulling out of the exchanges because they are far too expensive. Opening up an individual market BUT maintaining the Employer mandate for the majority of the private health care market doesn't allow for enough supply to actually drive down prices. United leaving will drive prices up even more. It would have been smarter to put all of us in the individual market and then allow health insurance across state lines. That is much closer to the German system this was originally based off.

4. It's noteworthy that most of the world's top health care systems are all based in the US despite us having some of the 'worst' outcomes according to the NHO. Free market systems always produce the best quality.

I could go on, but the great majority of reasons HC prices are going up is due to bad government policy, not the market.

Most places have urgent cares like MedExpress or what have you.

You should go there. I walk in, pay 125 bucks, can get X-rays, stitches, antibiotics (they sell most of them there for like 20 bucks) and most mundane shit there.

As for the larger issue of healthcare in the US-

If America wasn't too lawsuit-addicted (this doctor told me I had a sinus infection, turns out it was cancer! *litigation for about 500k*) it would drive down the cost of liability insurance for the hospitals, and healthcare professionals. Most of the nurses and doctors I know have to pay for their liability insurances, have either the hospital lawyer on retainer or have to have their own.

The rest is capitalism at its finest. They could charge as much as they want for anything they want. The only thing the government here is doing at large is just ensuring that a standard of care and protocols are in place.

See a different doctor? And not one in the hospital either. Hospital doctors unless you are going through surgery don't want to bother with your petty shit, while clinics have to thrive on the petty shit so they take you in with open arms.

But I'm guessing you are a retard.

>>
>>77828002
That's only true for HMOs since they have a payment structure called capitation.

Basically, with HMO plans, you are forced to pick a primary care doctor; you cannot go to any other, and to change it is a pretty big mess. Essentially, you become subscribed to that doctor (just like a newspaper subscription) and the HMO will pay that doctor a certain fixed amount per month, whether you see him or not. This is also true for specialists and with HMOs you need a GP to refer you, otherwise your insurance doesn't pay jack squat.

The logic behind it was that it will encourage doctors to save money by incentivizing them from ordering expensive and often times unneeded tests and procedures. However, the logic also went the other way: that they were incentivized from giving you good care.

Other plan structures like PPOs don't have capitation, just vanilla fee for service.
>>
Pharmacies need to be able to do tests. They can already do flu shots.
They would gladly provide the service free, because you would be buying their solutions. Doctors don't need to be dealing with sniffles
