If you want an entry level 1911, I'd recommend getting a Rock Island Armory. They've got a bunch of different versions with decent prices on all. A GLOCK wouldn't be a bad choice either though.

The government already knows I bought the gun since I got it from a shop and filled out the forms. In Ohio we can open carry without permit but you'll still get stopped and hassled. It's just better to get the permit and that way no one even knows you're strapped.
"The government" is the sheriff's office. They take fingerprints to do FBI criminal background check which is a step above your average gun shop background check. Even still, Uncle Sam will already know that I own funs if they bother to look very deep. Hell, I'm sure my ATF forms will come up when they process my passport application.

It does it's job well for the price. I don't have that many rounds through it (probably less than 100) but the only bad thing I've ever heard about it is the finish is shit (I concur).
I've shot target loads, high brass 00 buck, and deer slugs through it. It works just fine. Mine has the same wiggle in the action bars but I'm pretty sure that's normal considering it's a $200 pump.

Newer Remington 870s have plastic trigger groups also and it's the quintessential shotgun. There is no discernable difference in my 5 year old 870 Express with a plastic trigger group and my 1970s Wingmaster with a metal one.
