The things with the roads is that they were so messy, that we were force to face it and pay for the upgrade, because the alternative would be to tear it down and rebuild it, which is simply impossible.
The city I live in was here since the Romans, so there was just no way to predict what would be needed. Including the parking space, so now we have a lot of busses and subway stops and motorbikes because you can't park anywhere.

Yeah. Most people here regularly use the car as well, since I don't live in the capital, my commute is 'long' for my city and I take like 15 minutes to get to work, on the other side of town by car. But I don't think I've never driven over 2 hours unless I'm going on vacation to the south of the country with my family (with my friends we take the train). I can cover the whole country in like 6 hours though.
But longer distances we just take the train or the plane (to go to France and the rest of Europe). Since the Spaniards refused to change the train-track girth to fit the European standards and trapped us with the wide ones and we are on the very tip of the continent.
I think everyone else just takes the bus to commute within central Europe/Scandinavia/East Europe/England.
