Hi, yuropean here (french)

DON'T GIVE UP YOUR GUNS. The thing with the 2nd amendment, it's that it's the amendment which protects all the other ones. When you give up your guns, like in Yurope, you're basically at the mercy of your government.

That could be swell, if your government represents your people's interests. But it can become a death sentence, like it's the case today.

DON'T GIVE UP YOUR GUNS. Yes, there'll be mass shootings and the like. But it's a small price to pay for the most fundamental right. FREEDOM.

We like to play up the story of the "rangers" guys with kentucky long rifles whose long range helped fuel a guerilla war against the british. And while it's true such units existed, and managed to pick off some british officers at long range, they're effect is over exaggerated.

The Brit's didn't give up because our guerilla warfare was too costly, 90% of the engagements in the war where standard napoleonic battles. The Brits gave up because it was no longer financially reasonable to try to hold onto the colonies, and wouldn't be again even if they retook them. It was more of an economic decision than a military one.

What muzzle loaders have you fired? Typical infantry muskets during the Revolution were .69 to .71. During the Civil war they got a bit smaller, .54 to .69. Anything under .50 would be very underpowered for that era.

Try to halt violence by restricting gun ownership and you won't halt violence. But you will create entire classes of new criminals – people who make paperwork errors, violate technical specification of the law, or rebel against the new restrictions. And you'll create new bureaus, new enforcement arms, new prisons to punish them. You'll make hordes of lawyers and bureaucrats very happy. Organized criminals will be grateful to the naive moral crusaders ("useful idiots") as they profit by selling an illegal product. And ordinary street criminals will bless fools, legislators, and "leaders" for making their job so much safer. – JPFO's "Bill of Rights Sentinel", Fall 2001.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. - Thomas Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764
Criminals obey "gun control" laws in the same manner politicians follow their oaths of office. – Anonymous

Black powder isn't really my forte so don't ask me models/calibers, but at the local range on Range Days (open to everyone, and all the members bring all their shit for people to use), I've shot at least 20 different types of BP firearms.

If you're ever shit BP, you'll know that the recoil is more like a heavy push instead of the kick that smokeless powder gives. That said, BP pistols of large caliber will rival the recoil of most modern pistols...

I would imagine that the founding fathers said something like "these guns that have been evolving up until now but we're are just referring to only these sorts of arm; which ought to be obvious, right? We fought for people to be quite capable of being subjugated and for them to be entirely incapable of fighting for themselves!"

Why should a man wish for independence when a state could rule him rationally might actually be direct quote from Lincoln!
>>

Though the caliber was very high, remember these weapons were still using black powder and as a result had a much lower muzzle velocity. A modern 7.62mm hits with much more energy than the big musket balls of that era

Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution states that Congress has the following power:

"To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;"

A letter of marque is a kind of a naval hunting license. It allows a private citizen to fight on behalf of the government in wartime, stopping and capturing enemy vessels on the high seas. This is called privateering. In order to wage war at sea the said private citizen would have to have a warship. That would be something like the frigate, a ship armed with cannon.

Since one cannot be a privateer without a warship, the fact that this is in the Constitution demonstrates that it's authors fully expected armed warships to be in private ownership. A warship was basically the WMD of it's day, the most destructive weapon in existence. A ship's battery could level a coastal city

>Well Regulated

That phrase does not mean what you think it means.

Well Regulated at the time meant well, equipped, maintained and up to date. The same usage as a Regulated watch means adjusted to keep time properly. It had never meant controlled or overseen.

To convert Well Regulated in it's actual usage to modern times, it would mean an AR15, clean and at the ready, with 2000 rounds of ammunition, and enough high capacity magazines to respond to any situation necessary.

The current constitution is copied from the danish monarchy and in the process of being rewritten.

In practice the government has no military and the police force is not large enough to maintain power through force.

The Icelandic people have the power of force through both numbers and firepower, which is the intended consequence of the 2nd amendment but still isn't the case in the US.
>>
>>77715104
But that's not what it says. It says that the police are allowed to stop any gathering or assembly for any reason, and that the people are not allowed to be armed so that it will be easier for them.

>If you get a free pass at interpreting our Constitution, I get to interpret yours.

But mine is or yours, is actually closer to the intended purpose, than your is of ours.
