Marxism as a philosophy is 100% correct, I don't know how anyone can dispute that. No matter how much the economy and world evolves the principles he outlined are definitely there.
The problem is how to utilize those principles especially in such a radically changing economy. I think Communism could work properly in theory, but it would honestly be impossible trying to get it to work on a national scale.
Communism requires a community spirit to exist. Think of small villages in the countryside where everyone looks out for each other, or primitive tribes where everyone knows everyone else. For small communities of this size, Communism is practically human nature; everyone will work towards a common goal of improving their lives. If a plane crashed on a deserted island, and there were say 100 people, a Communist society would form very quickly.
On too large a scale, community spirit cannot exist. Past a few hundred or so people, the human mind cannot physically keep records of everyone in the community. On the scale of millions, this community spirit that drives Communist ideology breaks down completely, as you probably know less than 0.01% of the community you're supposed to work for. This causes people to become demotivated, because of the bystander effect. They feel that they do not matter, as everyone will do everything they want for them. They will be able to just lay back and watch everyone else slave away. Since the invention of the city, society has become less and less naturally Communist.

If the position of power is put into a process (like democracy, a soviet or just a meeting) there will be people who are more and people who are less capable in acting within that process, again resulting in unequal measures of power.
We are not computers but rather impressionable, political. We can be persuaded by more than just facts and rationality. Allegiances or support can be won by other means than rationality and facts. Any act of communication therefore becomes an act of politics, of power. Those who have less talent for communication or less substance to communicate inevitably have less power.

Some time ago, if you had asked me who the greatest revolutionary leader was, I might have written Mao as my favorite, as an example of a revolutionary leader who was able to do many things correctly, with some hindrance, but ultimately in a great success. What makes all people around the world suddenly have the same values and interests just because they're "working class?" Marxism holds that international working class must unite (in practice governed by the "socialist internationale" and other groups, like Soviet imperialism), but not all working people have the same interests; or are inclined to like each-other.
The Soviet Union intentionally watered-down nationalism to enforce a sense of devotion to the Kremlin bureaucracy. If you look at Lenin and Trotsky, they all shat on nationalism and cultural practices. The Soviets later, for one example, forced Estonians to take job in other Soviet states, then flooded Estonian with Russian settlers to erase Estonia's nationalism. The Chinese are currently doing the same thing to Tibet. They both used the canard that "it's for their own good, because they're not communist enough."
Also, mass immigration is in direct confict with native worker interests, because it creates competition for labor jobs, and immigrants consume more resources that the native populace could have had for themselves.
