He heard --the-- shot (weren't there two?), then ran outside and saw ladies from the cafe running with towels (if the towels were for the victims, then this implies that the violence had stopped and the attacker was apprehended).
From what he has described so far it seems as though he wasn't even aware of the attack until the gunshot caught his attention (and by then it was basically over).

He allegedly had a receipt for a pro-apartheid magazine from 1990, and bought a book from National Alliance (American white nationalist organisation --founded by William Pierce).
