Here's the thing, most states, even those with high ownership rates, prohibits carrying you weapon with you in most circumstances.
Why is it that the states with the harshest gun control laws are also the ones with the worst gun crime? Why is it most states with lax gun laws are generally low on the crime list?
Believe it or not, even a state like Hawaii has high gun ownership numbers... but that doesn't mean diddly squat when it is literally illegal to be in possession of your firearm unless it is unloaded in a separate locked container than your ammo, and you must be on your way to go to a shooting range, hunting, or to a gun shop for repairs, it doesn't do much to stop crime.
In a state like Arizona where you can open carry without a permit, conceal carry without a permit, and with a conceal carry permit (CCW) you can carry inside venues that serve alcohol as long as you don't consume any yourself you seem to hear about far less crime. If there was a permitted holder carrying inside the night club that night, they possibly could have stopped him themselves and limited the carnage.
Honestly the solution here is allow more of those who have proven themselves legally worthy, and capable of sufficiently handling a firearm to carry then with more freedom.
Taking guns won't stop gun crime, it will just take then from the only ones who can stop it.
Remember, when seconds matter police are only minutes, or in the case of Orlando, hours away. Plus the fact that the supreme court ruled that the police have no legal duty to protect you in times of peril is something to consider.

Self-defense isn't just about defending against other people with guns. It's also about defending against wildlife.
For instance, here in Texas I get rattlesnakes that decide they want to live in my yard. They're pretty dangerous. They strike faster than I can react and have longer reach than me with a shovel. I have to kill them with a shotgun. It's the only safe way for me to take care of the problem.

Violent people with violent thoughts will find a way to lash out at a society they feel have abandoned them. Banning guns won't help.

The founding fathers ennumerated a couple of the inalienable god given rights we had, but made clear that the document did not grant them itself, but we're given to us by very nature of existence. Self preservation is something no one can take away from you. You can always defend yourself whether told not to or not. The founding fathers fought to make sure you could compete with whomever sought to do you harm by not specifying the arms you could use. If it exists and could be used against you, you have every right to arm yourself with it or better. The capitalistic society we have is pretty rewarding with safety for success, but even the common man can even the playing field between him and the wolf at the door. The right to arm myself is not something you can separate from me while I'm alive. But they enumerated it this way to ensure the survivability of the principal on which they wrote it. I could arm myself with a chair in self defense. But at the point that I've been accosted and someone has broken the law, that which enforces the law, inconsequential violence, can be administered by the plaintiff. The state does not have a monopoly on violence, in fact, police, by several supreme court decisions, are not at all required to save you. Safety is not a right, it is a responsibility. And it is, legally, solely your responsibility. So yes, being well equipped is insurance. It's peace of mind, and not to mention it's fun as fuck.
