The terrorist attack had the wrong effect. We weren't wrong to think it would help Trump, but it was probably a 50/50 chance.
In fact what happened is the terrorist attack caused people to double down on their existing ideology in fear of having to face the truth or deal with a break in their ideology, which is like a break in reality.
Consider it like if you saw some paranormal phenomenon in real life. A normal person would rationalize it away pretty severely, even if it was in plain sight. They'd even go to the extent of being like "maybe it was a dream" or "maybe I'm mentally ill" instead of thinking their entire view of reality was wrong. That is the mechanism we saw go into effect here.
We were wrong to think it would be so easy to redpill people. There were probably even some people who were close to being redpilled but got scared when this happened and retreated further to the safe side.
