Clarification time. "Assault Rifle" is a term that's used for fully-automatic rifles. Full auto is for the most part banned in the US; citizens are only allowed to own full auto firearms that were in citizen hands before 1986, and there's a license thing that goes with it. If you want to try full auto weapons, the only place I know off the top of my head is a range in Las Vegas called "Battlefield Vegas".
"Assault Rifle" is often misused for any scary black 'salt rifle. If you want to shoot an AR-15 or another rifle in semi-auto, rifle ranges will often have rentals you can shoot. I'd ask for tips from them too, as they will also commonly help you learn to shoot it safely.
