I highly doubt we're desensitized to violence via video games. If we were, the game Hatred wouldn't have gotten as much flak as it did and would just be another game. I think what people are forgetting is the motivation behind the character we're playing as in the game. In Hatred, you just play a complete psychopath literally just wanting to cause suffering, no positive goal whatsoever. I'm sure even a majority of 4chan, with how fucked up it is and the rekt threads, would still have a hard time having fun with Hatred.
The No Russian mission on MW2, however, is a slightly different story. Yes, you are killing innocents, but it is easier to do because you know the character's true goals and motivations are, in the end, positive and will be for the greater good. This is just a test faith per se.
And then Multiplayer shooters, now that's just mindless fun and not comparable to real life violence because, surprise, respawns don't happen. You kill a player in a game, you know they'll respawn, shit ain't over. In real life, you just cut that person's thread to reality forever.
There's a big and inherent difference in violence between games and real life, the consequence of finality.
