You don't understand, capital cities have A LOT of people that aren't native to that region, thats where they all congregate. For this reason both London and Paris (and basically all others in the west side of Europe) cease to give the "feeling" of their countries to tourists. Choose somewhere else in your country of choice, better to ask a Frenchman if you're focusing on France.

London is alright. You can get a train for an hour and be in the Kent or Sussex countryside and see cottages or castles
An hour and a half to Roman Bath or to Stonehenge
You could euro star to Paris for a day or overnight stay

I went to London last year with my gf. Really wish I had just gone by myself because it's somewhere I've always wanted to go. It wasn't crazy expensive but also I met up with some coworkers who were there on business so I kind of had work perks and got taken out by my boss and the bills covered.

It has all of that certainly, but it also has normal, pretty unkempt districts covered in tags, and a more than its share of gipsies pickpocket praying on tourist in the subway or around museum. If you're into history and museum, it's definitely a great city to visit, as long as you pick your itinerary it's pretty much an open sky museum with added luxury shopping and food. Just don't expect all of Paris to be like that, and make sure to keep your bag close at all time.

Not sure what you mean here, like for exemple the Louvres was originally built in the 12th century, the orsay museum which is pretty much just across was built for the world exhibition of 1900, then there's the French institute from the 17th century, the Great palace, Jussieu university and Pompidou center from the second part of the XXth century... None of those building are close from an architectural or historical standpoint, and that's only talking about building that are close to the river.
