I assume that if you are getting kids, you get kids because you like children and want to raise your own children. If you don't, you shouldn't have children at all.
Having 1 child, that you are going to raise properly, will cost you a lot of your time for 18-21 years at least. Having say 5 children, will cost you much of maybe 25 years if you have them all in one go, depending if your wife are able. You get more children out of your time, but it is also more stressful, so having 2-3 children first then 2-3 children when the first ones are about 6-9 years would be ideal because the first set of kids can take care of the 2. set after a while, and the frist set will get a taste of how to raise children and generally bond with their siblings, and you will get some time to relax.
I belive that as a parent you should be 100% committed to his/her children, so being 100% committed for 21 years vs 30 years, having 1-2 children vs 5-6 - you get much more out of having more children. And I believe that big families are healthy, while small (especially ones with just one child) is unhealthy.

Also, having many children is healthy for the relationship with your wife too. I think that divorces are so high these days because people get so little children.
