because when you try to change the registry via the default admin account it reverts back within 24 hours.

because calculator and image viewer and pretty much everything useful are blocked/missing on the administrator account.

because it's "more integrated" for touchscreens or some shit

Read the privacy agreement. Win 10 is the most sophisticated personal gathering information tool ever devised - literally an uber spyware platform entrenched right down there in the operating system level. Instantly makes all forms of Doubleclick adware, among myriad others, obsolete. Even more effective as it will run on phones, your xbox etc tying all your personal media and device usage habits together.

Microsoft is competing with Google to be the ultimate vendor of target marketing information.

Read the Win 10 privacy agreement online, and see what the future holds for you sheeple.

Because they want unfettered access to everything on your hard drive. That way they can sell your information to the highest bidder. Of course, they are also working in updates into Win7 so that it can do the same stuff, and Win8 could already do this. If you aren't checking every single update MS pushes out, to see what it does, you may as well upgrade to 10, as your box is already compromised.

The only alternative is to reinstall Windows, or to turn to Linux.

If you're actually serious about wanting to install a distro, ubuntu is a good start to learn more about that kind of thing.

The only real problems with rolling release distros like arch and gentoo are the constant system maintenance and how easily arch can break. You don't *have* to update that often, though.

Because unlike linux or apple OS's which are lots of small programs, Windows pre 10 was one giant program that couldn't be upgraded in individual components.

By getting everyone to abandon the older operating systems, microsoft can now focus on updating only one more modular OS that can be updated piece meal continuously without even having to reboot the computer most of the time.

I believe enterprise does. But you purchase a site license for that.

Honestly, anyone who knows anything about computers avoids Windows 8 and 10 like the plague. If Win10 ever becomes mainstream in business, it will be due to the fact that the owners, who know nothing about computers, mandated that it be installed over the objections of their IT dept.

Unless you are completely comfortable with MS viewing every last thing on your computer, and reporting anything illegal to the NSA, I have no idea why on earth anyone would willingly install it.

Because piracy. Anymore questions? They're making Windows 10 for piracy because a lot of "anonymous users" are using more torrent software from the UK and other countries associated with it. That's why I have Windows 8.1. I blocked all of is telemetry services, weather report, and anything related to botnet features. I also use a firewall to block the ip. But sometimes I feel like they're collecting a lot more information about me. So I don't go online more too often. Btw I'm a pirate. I don't paid for software. I pay for it if they sell one in the store period. I don't give a shit if I get arrested from the NSA. If they do something with the virtual reality of selling software and bringing in legitimate products in boxes then I have no reason to pirate.
>>
>>77518647
I'm hesitant about 18. Looks like they are removing some of the features that they bundled in for "user-friendliness." I'm sure it saves a lot of time and money, but the entire point of Mint was to make it user friendly for Windows ex-pats.

I'm positive I'll be upgrading eventually, but I see no need to rush, as 17.3 will be supported for years.

I'm not aware of anything that they are removing but then again, I'm just a sucker for longer supported releases and any added software that makes it more windows-like. I hate using terminal for anything.

They are definitely heading in the right direction. I remember being unable to format USB drives though terminal not so long ago and now they have a program for that. Not to mention how many things they're adding into software manager. Upgrading through update manager is also a great feature, although I'm not sure why they haven't added an auto-update feature there yet.

Are these codecs going to be installed from within the ISO or is someone going to have to connect to the internet to get them?

It wasn't mentioned in the article but I suppose the Richard Stallman types are glad to see them gone as I've heard they're mostly proprietary.

The other thing is that Linux still has tons of hardware issues, some that they will probably never fix. I upgraded from 13(I think) to 17 and lost the ability to lose my track-pad. No amount of fucking around will make that or my FN button work. I have updated the kernel without any effect.
>>
>>77519278
I actually do have a dual boot setup right now, but I don't use the Linux because I prefer to have everything consolidated in one OS.
>>
>>77521020
No idea on the internet connetivity.

Interesting. I haven't had any issues with my laptop, with the sole exception of frying a usb drive once. Still works on Windows, but Mint just won't recognize it anymore.
>>

>>
>>77521190
I've installed Mint on three other laptops and mine is the only one with hardware issues. I even had problems with the audio card not working at one point.

>>77521195
Wouldn't it be a kernel problem and not an OS problem at this stage? I'll download an Ubuntu ISO tomorrow and test it out. What version do you like?

If you have the coins, qemu or KVM passthrough is a thing. You can consolidate it all in Linux and confine the botnet in a VM.

They are just duct taping new features onto a rotten core, and it's showing. Due to this, it is an absolute whore to work on, but MS doesn't want to spend time or money fixing it, because it doesn't effect the end user (except that it does, and your rig can go tits up with any update).

Have another similar but older post also from a Microsoft employee that kinda touches upon similar issues:
http://blog.zorinaq.com/?e=74

>There's also little incentive to create changes in the first place. On linux-kernel, if you improve the performance of directory traversal by a consistent 5%, you're praised and thanked. Here, if you do that and you're not on the object manager team, then even if you do get your code past the Ob owners and into the tree, your own management doesn't care. Yes, making a massive improvement will get you noticed by senior people and could be a boon for your career, but the improvement has to be very large to attract that kind of attention. Incremental improvements just annoy people and are, at best, neutral for your career. If you're unlucky and you tell your lead about how you improved performance of some other component on the system, he'll just ask you whether you can accelerate your bug glide.

>Look at recent Microsoft releases: we don't fix old features, but accrete new ones. New features help much more at review time than improvements to old ones.

>(That's literally the explanation for PowerShell. Many of us wanted to improve cmd.exe, but couldn't.)

Not true. He frequently does "technical reviews" on new products. In the 1.5 years I have worked at Microsoft, he has done three reviews that I am aware of. Two of them were on things I worked on (as part of a larger team) whereas another I heard about second-hand. Presumably, he is doing these quite frequently (much more than just these three) since I am a junior developer without special access to information.

NSA intel gathering is bundled into it. Microsoft reserves the right to sell all information transmitted from your computer via the Windows 10 EULA which permits them to electronically extract any data from your system -- keystrokes, screenshots, files, movements of your mouse, shit from your conversations, stuff you type on 4chan -- to be sold to any organization, including the NSA and any other organization with contacts in Microsoft's data brokerage that wishes to have your info. So even if you're not on a watchlist, the NSA can still get your shit just because you use Windows 10.

Traditionally, ubuntu was considered the best go-to distro, but recently it's been a piece of shit and might be hard to use for a beginner.
I personally haven't tried mint, but now that it's based on debian and not ubuntu, it might be worth a try.
I'm currently testdriving manjaro as a new "beginner's" distro, and so far it's done a fantastic job, easily on par with ubuntu when ubuntu was actually good. I have yet to test the quality of the package testing they do in the stable branch, though, but hopefully, unlike arch, I won't get a broken X in 6 months.

Overall, the ultimate distro from my extensive experience is, unironically, gentoo, for shittons of reasons that aren't worth mentioning here.

Try either mint (YMMV) or manjaro. Manjaro has access to many more packages than mint, but mint is more mainstream.
