>suggests the controversial EM drive - or electromagnetic drive - could actually work

Can I just remind everyone that the reason this isn't a slam dunk yet despite a year and change since discovery is that it produces so little thrust it's within the margin of error in measuring it.

Do you understand how little that is?

Even at full potential this thing would generate minuscule thrust. It's still interesting and potentially important for microsatellites and probes, or some kind of colony ship that could accelerate for literally hundreds of years.

It's not practical, it's not warp drive, it's not a magical new power source.
And it's not even confirmed to be a real measurement.

Ion thrusters can barely make a piece of toilet paper move on earth, yet in space they can achieve insane speeds.

Enjoy the ONE WAY trip with NO way to slow down or stop. Better hope the eggheads aimed the rocket the right way, or you're off to oblivion.

Photonic propulsion will NOT colonise the stars. We quite literally need to learn how to bend space time itself, which at the moment seems impossible. Even if CERN find some magical exotic matter, what are you going to do? Collide atoms enough times for enough highly improbable outcomes that results in enough ultra rare exotic matter to even begin testing let alone power space flight?

Again, it's fucking nothing.

>They're making stuff up on the fly, says for decade it doesn't work.

That's the scientist community for you.
Bunch of old academics, holding onto their ideas like religious zealots.
If there's something that challenges their world view, they won't let that shit fly, even if you were 100% correct and had the evidence to support it.

A good example of the academics fuckery, is American missionary Keren Everett, who studied languages in the Amazon.
There he spent a lot of time with people called Pirahã and basically proved that not all language is based on recursion, an idea that's currently supported by the scientific community.
Those people didn't even know how to count, there were no numbers.
What did the scientific community do?
They fucking banned him from seeing the tribe again, sent a bunch of people there to modernize the tribe and fucked up their language by teaching them numbers and other ideas.

So it's no wonder that a thing like EM drive hasn't gotten accepted before.
So far this thing has gone against everything the modern physicist believe in, so there's no way in hell that this idea would have gained their support in the past.
It still hasn't. It has just gotten more attention and it has gone through some tests.
But maybe with papers like this, it gets more credibility since it's more grounded in the reality current science accepts.

>>
>>77476936
Okay, I've read it, it's actually pretty interesting. For those who don't get the physics, it's basically saying that in the microwave interactions, the magnetic part of two waves can destructively interfere. These wave can escape the drive, since it has no perpendicular magnetic field to stop them at interface.

Reppressed Evolution of Man
Human civilization and advancement has been stagnant. All our technologies have not uplifted the condition of man and we still struggle with the same problems of 100 and even 1000 years ago.
We all know that Tesla wanted to advance human civilization forward by 1000 years, with free energy harnessing the earth's electromagnetic energy and transmitting it globally through the ionospehere and other advanced technologies,
What other technologies and advancements have been repressed /suppressed to stagnate and reverse human evolution?

>Alternative Engines
>William Bolon - from Rialto, California, developed an unusual steam engine design in 1971, that was said to get up to 50 miles to the gallon. The engine used only 17 moving parts and weighed less than 50 pounds and eliminated the usual transmission and drive train in an automatic. After much publicity, the inventors factory was fire bombed with damages totaling $600,000 . Letters to the Whitehouse were ignored so the inventor finally gave up.

Your thinking Photonic laser thrusters you sperglord. EM drive =/= that stuff, which is also cool.
>>
>>77484925
So just because they are out of phase they (or any form of energy they used to contain) simply cease to exist? Since energy and matter can not simply cease to exist, what becomes of it, and where does it go? You also seem to have missed the part (did you even read the article?) where they claim the need to use a gravity interferometer to detect the created out of phase photons. I don't really understand this completely, but I'd wager you don't either.
>>
>>77491532
An interferometer is not that hard of a thing to understand.

They shine a laser through a beam spliter, they have that laser travel two paths of equal distance and combine them at the far end where they have the ability detect if the lasers are in phase or not with each other with extreme precision.

Then they intersect one laser path with the field they wish to study and measure the amount of phase shift the field causes.

Yeeahh... I feel like they wouldn't let religious people be among the first to colonize another planet.
>>
>>77486973
You're missing the point. This device (which in all reality is probably bogus) produces thrust from energy. Or better put, produces thrust energy from electrical energy, presumably from a thermo-nuclear battery. The breakthrough would be the fact that pure energy, instead of particulate exaust would be the action-reaction mechanism. However in the void of space there is nothing for the electromagnetic "exaust" to interact with. So unless the all permeating either or æther exist and this new technology has found a way to react with it, this is all a bunch of sc-fi nonsense.
>>
>>77493337
It doesn't have to interact with anything. Imagine standing in a boat and tossing rocks overboard. The boat is gonna move in the opposite direction of the throw. The heavier the rock the more the boat moves. That's what happening here. The tiny mass of all those ions shooting out of the thruster is what "pushes".
>>
>>77492044
I was simply pointing out the fact that there is an effect than can be detected. I do understand how an interferometer works. I was talking about the EM drive concept in general.
>>
Ayy hol up...

Couldn't you use these as a suicide weapon to destroy the Earth? Send an EM-drive projectile away then have it loop back, impacting the planet at near-light speeds? It would be a slow, but guaranteed destruction?
>>
>>77493676
Okay thanks.
I was just under the impression that photons had very virtually no mass and that this effect would be negligible for propulsion. I thought there would have to be some "magic" interaction with an unknown force to push against. I guess you would have to be correct because gravitational lensing is a thing.

Learning every day!

>>
>>77491532

The logic goes something like this. Two waves destructively interfere, creating 0 amplitude over all space on the "exhaust" side. 0 amplitude of the electric and magnetic fields is equivalent to saying zero energy and zero momentum. Therefore no photons are actually being ejected. If the exhaust is invisible from an EM point of view, then either the engine works by ejecting something other than EM waves, or it doesn't work at all.
>>
>>77494774
It would be terrifying and your existence would be even more meaningless, but the opportunities would be endless.
>>
>>77494774
Of course it's terrifying to the average /pol/ proto-poster propagating their own peaceful perception of life with their pals on this polyneasian poultry board with their persecution of jews trying to convince themselves they have some grasp on their life. These people need to peel away from their pitiful pits they call lives and see the world is a lot more chaotic than what their conspiracy theories would lead them to believe.
>>
>>77495422
If two waves destructively interfere than the energy used to create them is nullified breaking conservation of energy. You cant just turn something into nothing pleb.
>>
>>77496391

Okay, then what form is the energy in? It can't be photons, because then otherwise the field wouldn't be zero.
>>
>>77496570
Nobody really knows that's the point. It might even just be a rounding-error at this point.

>>77496570

>>
>>77482665

>>
>>77491532
In every experiment I've heard of and in the math, when light waves destructively interfere in one place they will constructively interfere in other places to make up for the lost energy. The double slit experiment has bands that are twice as bright as the single slit beam iirc.
>>
>>77496747

Hence the name "meme drive." The energy of the exhaust is carried in the form of people spreading this nonsense on message-boards and kikebook.
>>
>>77495422
Didn't the article specifically state that because of the phase cancelation the only way to detect an "exaust" was gravity? Shits actually over my head tbqh.
>>
>>77493337
What is Newtons third law?
>>
>>77497500

Considering it took us 100 years to detect gravitational waves, and we can only see them due to the massive amount of G waves released from accelerating black holes, it's really unlikely that we could detect such miniscule amounts of energy using GR effects.
>>
>>77497314

in science fiction novels i've read, sometimes they put a huge cone of ice onto the front of the ship. this servers two purposes:

1. to keep the ship cool from all the friction that happens at high relativistic speeds

2. to gather/catch any debris that might be in the way of the ship.

Alastair Reynolds books. ships are called lighthuggers but they use fusion drives. (ships are miles long and the ice cone in the front is basically a giant manmade iceberg)

I know where you're getting at but space is not a perfect vacuum. There's still quantum fluctuations, photons, and minute quantities of gas. Worst case scenario (if the thing even works) you'd see less efficiency in space.

I want to see much more testing on this, rule out all possible interference, then test it in space.
