I spent about a month in Ethiopia travelling.
Nicest place in Africa by far. The higher altitudes mean the land, at least most of it, is green and lush. It reminded me a lot of England. The people are friendly and of the Ethiopian/Nubian race: tall, slender, thin noses. Very staunch Coptic Christians.
Disgusting food though, although they drink honeyed mead, which is nice.

Think they were given a bit of a free pass seeing as they had some semblance of ancient, Christian, civilization which the Great Powers would have respected. Firstly all of Africa was capable of making iron and steels via direct processes since 800BC and they had quite a bit of meteoric iron before that (not much tin though so less bronze than Europe). Secondly Ethiopians wouldn't have been encouraged to expand South due to tsetse flies, West into Sudan was infertile desert and North was controlled by Mamluks who had Ottoman backing etc.
